What an enjoyable novel!! This book was filled with a variety of unique situations. A summary: A young mother flees one town, due to severe judgment, only to find that same judgment in her new town treating her as a "harlot"; a pastor preaching sermons of hate instead of God; a drought that causes lack of food and death to animals; the strange abundance of food at a time of "want"; a cold hearted father whose heart is softened by the innocence and love of a young child; the power and strength behind the phrase "And a child shall lead them"; and the newness of life after the miracle of rain after a season of drought.

This is a book which has as its main theme, forgiveness. It portrays the power people have over the lives of other people and of themselves by way of judgment and unforgiveness.

I will never look at rain as "bothersome" again.

This book was given to me by the author through bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review

Miracle in a Dry Season was much more than a book to sit down for reading pleasure. It was a book that really had its teachable moments but not in a preachy way. It had those moments within the story and being the story. With a vibe of the Scarlet Letter, a bit of the story about the adulterous woman whom Jesus said those without sin could cast the first stone, and a touch of the miracle of the five loaves and fishes, than you have a recipe for a stand out book. This book takes place in Wise, West Virginia, 1954, where the folks there dish out plenty of gossip and are skimpy with the forgiveness. It showed how sin is sin and all of it is harmful. How gossip and slander can be just as hurtful to a person as adultery. How being judgmental and unforgiving can blind you to your own faults and you begin to believe you are better than someone else, even to the point of hatred. Perla, an unwed mother, has come to stay with her aunt and uncle to escape the talk of her parents town only to run into the same type of people. However, when a severe drought hits and the only hope the town has is coming from the one person whom they have rejected and slandered, will they be able to put down their prejudices and superstitions to get the help they need or will they choose to starve? With poignant storytelling and eye opening truths, this is a book that I wont soon forget. I received my copy from The Book Club Network, Inc. (TBCN) and the opinions are my own.

An affirmed bachelor and a new-in-town single mother meet each other at church doesnt it sound like part of a recipe for a modern romance novel? In a small 1954 farming community, however, caution signs abound. Add a heavy drought and a deeply disturbed pastor, and a recipe for disaster may simmer in the pot instead. This is the setting for this outstanding drama by Sarah Loudin Thomas, Miracle in a Dry Season.

There is a draw of sorts between Perla Long and Casewell Phillips from the first time they meet. Has the Lord put them together in this time and place to learn how best to use their gifts to work together to help others, or for something longer than this season of drought? Yet, Perla is less and less anxious for others to see her gift why would anyone want to put their light under a bushel? And why would others choose to see her with suspicion rather than welcome her with grace and Christs love?

Sarah Loudin Thomas has provided believable, well-rounded characters. Even Pastor Longbourne, while bordering on mental illness, can almost be pictured in all of his indignant crowing and strutting. We can understand and empathize with Casewell, his parents, Perla, and her daughter Sadie. The authors gifts of understanding human behavior and character portrayal brings us colorful, three-dimensional people that she adds shading to so as to show each with their own depth of spirit and soul in the manner of a well-seasoned writer.

The setting is uncomplicated, a perfect backdrop to not distract from these complex people and circumstances. There were many unexpected occurrences that sweetened the read; some were heartwarming and others sad in other words life. Through the authors gentle prose we see less of the events themselves than we do what the Lord draws out of each person through the circumstances. I would love to hear where Sarah found the inspiration for this one-of-a-kind story! Each of us is given our own dry season(s); I would hope that as a result of reading Miracle in a Dry Season that I would be able to recognize with joy and thanksgiving the miracle that the Lord sends even more, that I could learn to use His gifts to help others in their own droughts.

If you appreciate Christian drama that is at once realistic, heartwarming, and overall satisfying, you wont want to miss a word of Miracle in a Dry Season. Lord willing, we will see much more from this author in the future!

I received a copy of this book through the For Readers Only group at The Book Club Network, in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation was received for this review.

This is a debut novel for this author. The author brings a touching story about a small community set in 1954. It's a story that will evoke many emotions and grab your heart. This story is wonderfully written. It's about new beginnings, trust, forgiveness, love and faith. The well developed characters will pull the reader in, but the vivid imagery and great storyline keeps them turning the pages.

Perla Long is looking for a fresh start for both she and Sadie, her daughter. She has made mistakes in her life, but truly doesn't want them to define her entire life. Moving to Wise, Virginia to live with her aunt and uncle is the first step in making a new life for them. Unfortunately tight lipped gossips and self righteous people begin to questions everything about Perla and her daughter. Can Perla and Sadie have a new start? Who can Perla trust? Does she have enough faith to see her through these trying times? Can she forgive those she has wronged or who have wronged her? Will she find love?

It was hard for me to believe this was Sarah Loudin Thomas's first novel. It was extremely well written and held my interest all the way through. I first was drawn to read this book because it was set in 1954, the same year I was born. But the storyline and characters quickly drew me in. A small country type town with a close knit community worked together during an extreme drought that nearly devastated everyone and everything. Perla came to the town, a stranger, to live with her aunt and uncle and get away from her judgmental parents and neighbors. She came with a daughter, Sadie, born out of wedlock, which for that period of time was unacceptable. Even her move to Wise, West Virginia brought about gossip and speculation. I kept hoping she would tell the circumstances of how she got pregnant in the first place, but it was only touched on very lightly. I'm thinking maybe the author wanted the reader to look at Perla in the light of how the townspeople should have, with forgiveness. Casewell, a name I'd never heard before, was the main male character. He formed a close relationship with Perla, but still held back because of her reputation being talked about in the community. The preacher in the town was the worst about forming opinions of Perla and even insinuated that she was a witch. He blamed the extreme drought on her and her sin. Having nearly the whole congregation turn against her for a time. Perla, however, had an unusual gift from God that she was willing to share with everyone, even those that condemned her. The story was one of forgiveness. No one is without sin and God looks on all sin the same, from those that tell little white lies to those that murder. I loved the ending! I will leave it at that..... I received this book from the publisher through Bookfun.org for my honest opinion, which I have given.
