Nothing even comes close to this monumental work on Luke by Darrell Bock. The format of this series is just excellent and I wish we could see some new volumes! At any rate, Bock has simply provided us with the most thorough exegesis of Luke that has ever appeared. Technical, yet lucid. Tremendous background information! Much synoptic interaction. A veritable feast of Greek helps. Critical interaction, including direct interaction with the "Jesus Seminar" at many points. These volumes are worth the price and will provide you with a wealth of information on Luke's gospel. Thanks to Darrell Bock for this excellent work!

This 2 volume set on Luke gives accurate historical grounds for the truth of Luke's history.

Great work by Darrell Bock. This is Bock at his finest. Though I don't agree with his perspective on sources ( he advocates the 'Q' source and others), I can highly recommend this commentary. At first I was quite intimidated by the number of pages of this commentary, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop. Though he relies upon other authors a good bit, he puts a lot of information in front of the reader in a single volume instead of having to get all those other authors. He presents the perspectives and then shows why he leans one direction or another. Bock organizes his material very well, and is scholarly enough to satisfy the desire for a 'deep' commentary, yet readable enough to not frustrate the reader with jargon that can't be understood.

I've thoroughly enjoyed perusing this scholarly approach to the gospel of Luke. This expository is definitively, clearly organized as advertised, and most readable. However, I found it disappointing that all passages are not afforded the same degree of analysis. It seemed that earlier passages were exhaustively analyzed while others are barely discussed.

Bock has written a very good commentary on Luke; but it is not the definite commentary, for he is competing with two very good modern day commentaries, by Marshall (NIGNT) and Nolan (WBC). The exegesis is sound, so even the layperson will have no difficulty. He discusses the various textual issues in details, and gives justice to both sides of the coin. Scholars and students will benefit from this detailed commentary. I highly recommend this commentary to all, even if you own Geldenhuys, Green, Marshall, Nolan and Plummer.
