Letters to Katie: A Middlefield Family Novel, by Kathleen Fuller, is the third book in the Middlefield Family Series. It continues the story of Sawyer and Laura, from Faithful to Laura, as well as telling the story of Johnny and Katherine. It also includes Adam and Emma from Treasuring Emma. The stories are interwoven, just as our lives are interwoven in any community.

Katherine has loved Johnny for years and has been very open about the matter. He, however, has never shown any reciprocal feeling for her. Just when she decides to move on with her life and let her feelings for Johnny go, he decides to let her know that he does love her. Unfortunately, when he arrives at her home to tell her, she has developed meningitis and loses a part of her memory. Since she doesn't remember him sharing his feelings, he has to find another way to show her how he feels. Meanwhile, Laura and Sawyer deal with telling their families about their upcoming marriage.

This was a wonderful book. I enjoyed these characters and could relate to their reactions to various situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Amish fiction, but I would definitely read this series in order.

Katherine Yoder yearns for a marriage and family like most young women. The fact that she is surrounded by happy marriages and the anticipation of new babies only deepens that longing. She is never idle, working at Mary Yoder's restaurant, helping her parents, sewing, needlework....but that doesn't fill the hole in her life. But perhaps God has plans that are different from hers.

For most of her teenage and adult life, Katherine has loved her best friend's twin brother, Johnny Mullet, but that love was never returned. Currently, Johnny is busy making his own way as he buys a farm which needs an overhaul and sets up his business raising horses. When a stranger arrives in town, Isaac, it makes Katherine wonder if perhaps she has been looking in the wrong direction for God's plan. Suddenly, he leaves but begins the two begin to write letters to one another. When illness strikes Katherine suddenly, each of these character's eyes open to what is truly important as they begin to seek God first, a lesson each of us can learn from.

Letters to Katie by Kathleen Fuller is the third installment in the Middlefield Family series following Treasuring Emma and Faithful to Laura but don't let that stop you from reading this delightful Amish centered story if you haven't read the other two. I started the series with this one and found that filling in any missing gaps was fairly easy to do and didn't detract from the story. There are quite a few characters in the book to keep up with that may have been easier to keep track of if I had read the other two books first but, again, did not keep me from enjoying the story itself. If you enjoy Amish fiction, Kathleen Fuller currently has about 10 to choose from. I found her style very easy and enjoyable to read and hope to have opportunity to read more of her writings.

I did receive this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way obligated to leave a positive review.

Have you ever had a time when you thought you knew exactly how things were going to play out in your life–but things didn't go according to your plan? Has serious illness ever changed your perspective on things? Have you ever found your answers in the most unexpected places? Then you will enjoy Letters to Katie.

Katherine had thought since childhood that Johnny Mullet would learn to love her–but what about this handsome Isaac who has his eye on her? Johnny buys an old run down horse farm that he plans to fix up, but how will he do it without an interested investor? Katherine is sure she's found an entrance into Johnny's heart--but what happens when company shows up? Johnny finds the perfect time to tell Katherine what is on his mind, but what impact will her serious illness have on his plan?

Too often, we try to figure it all out for ourselves. We plan, and we scheme, and we dream without regard for God's plan for our lives. "I've always put you first in my life, in my thoughts, in my heart. It's time for me to do that with God." (page 259) One of my favorite verses says it best–"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11 NIV. God has a plan for our lives, and it is always in our best interest. God is on your side! A life partner, a business venture, making a large purchase, a job–God has a plan–but are we willing to pray and search out what His will is before jumping into our own plans? When we give it to God, and we let Him lead us to our decisions, sometimes He gives us the very thing we wanted all along. It is just in His timing and His way rather than our own. Sometimes it is remembering who we are in Christ that teaches us how to move forward in our own lives. Kathleen Fuller does a stellar job of unfolding this truth within the story. The story is so believable and real, that it draws you in, revealing a storyline that plays out this scriptural concept in a simple, yet profound way. This story is filled with beautiful romance, unexpected suspense, a little bit of attitude, and Godly truth.

This story is set in the heart of Middlefield, Ohio's Amish community.

Katherine Yoder fell love with Johnny Mullet when he gave her a push on a tire swing & brushed a leaf off of her shoulder. When she is grown she still feels love for him but he never seemed to notice her. When she becomes ill and forgets about three weeks of time (during which time Johnny had hurt her without meaning too). The doctor says she may never remember that time. Then she receives letters from another young man that she doesn't remember at all. Since he's from another town no one knows who he is and who the letters are from. Katie learns to lean on God and trust him to guide her. She refuses to see or talk to Johnny for awhile but then he sends her a letter. Can't tell you anymore or I would ruin the book. I started this book on the morning of July 4th and finished it about lunch time on July 5th. We had the cookout and family at our house on the 4th so didn't get to finish this delightful book the same day.

This is the third in a series and there is some updates from the characters in the other two books. You can read this as a stand alone but I do recommend the other two as well. Kathleen Fuller is a well written author, her characters come alive and she shows how each grows through their faith, the help of families and friends. I think you will truly enjoy this book.

Kathleen Fuller finishes up her Middlefield Family series in fantastic form with Letters to Katie. She promised me she would tie up loose ends of the series in this book -- and she did a superb job of fulfilling that promise.

The story is filled with great characters -- like Katherine, Johnny, Sawyer, Laura, and Cora -- many of whom are familiar "faces" from the earlier books. There is enough uncertainty in Katherine's and Johnny's story to keep you turning the pages, and the continuing struggle between Sawyer and his grandmother adds a whole other dimension of interest.

Kathleen has delivered a thoughtful message of people learning the importance of giving up personal goals to search for God's plans -- and the sometimes unexpected benefits of doing so.

I would highly recommend Letters to Katie to anyone who enjoys great Amish fiction. You will likely appreciate the story more, though, if you first read Treasuring Emma and Faithful to Laura.

Thanks to Kathleen and her publisher, Thomas Nelson, for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
