Product Description

Leading from the Second Chair offers an invaluable resource to leaders who serve in second (and third and fourth) chair roles, enabling them to become more productive, proactive and fulfilled. The book reveals the paradoxes of second chair leadership. These leaders must be subordinate to the top leader yet lead in their own right. They should be deep in their expertise but wide in perspective. And they must be content in their jobs yet remain enthusiastic about their dreams for the future.

Leading from the Second Chair equips readers with the positive attitudes, skills, and strategies needed to become powerful leaders who will survive and thrive in God's service.

Publisher's Description

LEADING FROM THE SECOND CHAIR will raise awareness of the need for strong leaders in secondary positions. It will describe the value they can bring to their organization and to primary leaders when they are serving at their full potential. It will reshape the way they view their role, with an emphasis on their own responsibility as leaders. It recognizes the unique challenges and frustrations of serving in a subordinate position and equips these leaders with the attitudes and skills that they will need to survive and thrive in this new paradigm.

Because of the scarcity of resources for second chair leaders, particularly those in the church, this book will offer a practical way to improve the performance of any organization. Leading Congregational Change discussed the importance of a "vision community"--a diverse group of key members who discern and implement the vision for a congregation--to guide the transformation of a church. This work will extend the theme of an empowered leadership team as we explore how individual clergy and laity can lead effectively.

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a church consultant, leadership coach, and a second chair leader in a local church. Even though I now serve in vocational ministry, my career began with an MBA and 15+ years of experience in business. I love my family and my church, and I'm excited about the doors that God continues to open in my life.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Too many second chair leaders feel frustrated and lonely in their roles. We hope to at least begin a dialogue about what it means to be a leader and a follower at the same time, to have dreams but to choose contentment in the present. In doing so, we hope that second chair leaders will find greater joy and fulfillment as they serve in God's Kingdom.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  We desire for the church and church leaders to be strengthened and to minister at their maximum effectiveness. "Second chair leaders" have few resources that acknowledge the unique challenges of their role. We hope that readers will find this to be a practical and encouraging resource.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I'm thankful for my wife, my parents, and many unsung people who have deeply influenced my journey of faith. Leadership Network has been a tremendous resource for me as a Christian leader. I enjoy reading a variety of Christian authors, including C.S. Lewis, Andy Stanley, Reggie McNeal, and Bill Hybels. I've also learned much about leadership from secular authors such as Jim Collins and Robert Quinn.
