I have a 7 year old, and he is not a fan of phonics. Last year we did the Even Moor phonics (which was ok), but this year we chose to do Horizons Phonics and Math. So far, it seems very similar to last year's book, but the tests pages are easier for him to understand and do by himself. The pictures are cute and colorful, and the pace at which he is learning new concepts is perfect for him. Writing/phonics is not his strength (it's math), and although Horizons Math moves VERY quickly (which is good for us), the Horizons phonics moves along at a much slower pace. We are going to stick with the Horizons Math and Phonics for many years.

I was a little disappointed to see that some of the changes in the lessons didn't make it in to the teacher's manual and some weren't completely changed in the student's workbook, (i.e. a picture of a sheep that had the child writing "shed" underneath.) Other than that we love this series! My 6 year old does better at it than I do! She never fusses to do her phonics, which is a blessing!

I really like the Horizons Program. Both my boys (grades 1 & 2) have done very well with the Horizons phonics, math, penmanship and spelling. Regarding the "weird" stories...we just found them interesting and different from what you read today. My son liked learning "new" vocabulary and looking up words in his spelling dictionary that he hadn't seen before. The 2nd grade readers that go with the Phonics program had two wonderful classic stories in them and my oldest looks forward to reading them every school day. I am ordering Kindergarten, 2nd and 3rd grade programs from Horizons for this coming year!

We have used Horizons in the past and liked it. This is our first year using the 2nd grade reading and phonics books. The pictures in them are not clear for a 2nd grader to figure out (or even me sometimes- i have to pull out the teacher's book to see what they are trying to get at). Ex: Test 1- cirlce the pictures that begin with the soft g sound. the pictures that are supposed to be circled are of a lady holding a baby in a chair (that is supposed to represent 'gentle' and a ring with an arrow pointing at the diamond (that is supposed to represent 'gem'). It is a test, so I am not supposed to be helping my child, but how is my 7 year old supposed to know that a lady in a chair means gentle? It is frustrating. We are 10 lessons in and have come across this numerous times. The reader is good, with good stories for a 2nd grader, but the workbook needs work.
