Jimmy ReaganLeesville, SCAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Great atlas!February 22, 2014Jimmy ReaganLeesville, SCAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Are you looking for a genuinely helpful Bible Atlas? Be sure to consider the Holman Bible Atlas byThomas Brisco and published by B & H Publishing as part of its Holman Reference titles. It has many strengths to make it one of the top two or three options out there. Its professed audience is "for the interested lay person and beginning level student of the Bible in colleges and seminaries." It has succeeded for that audience as well as for we pastors.
Its maps are prolific, visually appealing, and timely. You truly get maps where you most need them. 132 maps cover the Biblical text well and places and events are well labelled too. Variety shows up as a few have a 3D view as well. You might find a detail or two to squabble over (like omitting Perea's important presence in Christ's ministry), but overall you will find accuracy in this volume. In the primary characteristic of an atlas, this volume gets an "A".
The pictures materially add value to the text. The author's experience in archaeology shows in his often showing us ruins of famous sites. I particularly enjoyed those. Charts that really summarize and teach are used to good effect too.
One of the best features of this atlas is the text explaining the geography and how it impacted the Bible story discussed. For example, in the section on the time of David there is a fascinating description of Jerusalem, how it grew, and how its topography affected how it grew. Mr. Brisco, and the many others who contributed, show considerable learning and put it to good use. It actually makes for good reading.
There is little to criticize here. You can question the chronology here or there, or wonder why if there is such a dandy map for the Eighth Century Prophets, why aren't there other maps for the other prophets. Or you might wonder why there are no page numbers. Since the atlas is in chronological order, however, the loss is not great for Bible students.
This is a top-flight Bible Atlas. The most recent printing has a much improved cover too. You will not regret adding this volume to your study library.
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255. -
WhitesaberArizonaAge: Over 65Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5Holman Bible AtlasMarch 27, 2020WhitesaberArizonaAge: Over 65Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If given one word to describe the Holman Bible Atlas, for me, that word would be, "Delightful". It is an Atlas, but it has so many other features.
The maps and other information is presented chronologically with a date line running through the page number at the top of each page showing the approximate time of the content of that particular page. The text is well written with the reader in mind. It is informative and descriptive, without being dry or insipid.
The archaeological information and photographs of ancient artifacts and art and significant geological ruins and other important sites lightly delves the secular history of the region as well as the Biblical accounts of the religious history of the Holy Land and of the Middle East.
The maps are colorful, informative, and plentiful. There are (2) indexes, one for people and places giving the page number, and one for the places that are shown on the maps giving the map number. Some of the maps are shown in a "cross-sectional-isometrical" mixture that depicts changes in elevation graphically as well as colorfully. There are maps that show battle locations, travel routes, recorded events, etc. Some maps even show the trade routes to and from other civilizations at the different historical epochs. The pages are thick, opaque, and semi-glossy.
Thoroughly enjoyable, this book is as much toy as tool. -
Annie5 Stars Out Of 5Holman Bible AtlasMarch 12, 2015AnnieQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I wanted a Bible atlas that has Bible history along with maps, charts and pictures. I got what I was looking for. For those of you looking for an atlas that is more than just maps and pictures, for those of you looking to read a brief history that describes what was happening during a particular period of time, then this book might be what you're looking for. I recommend it.

Jeremy5 Stars Out Of 5Concise and informativeJune 18, 2022JeremyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Just what I was looking for in a Bible atlas. It parallels the Bible, so I can reference both at the same time. The photos and maps are vibrant and well documented. Disregard the review about index page numbers not being accurate. The map index references map numbers not page numbers. For instance, Gilgal is found on map #10 which is found on page 17. The maps are numerically labeled.

Amy5 Stars Out Of 5Great resourceJune 14, 2022AmyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a great resource for the money. It is informative with many photos and maps. A previous poster mentions not finding "Gigal." Mine references "Gilgal." (spelled to include the "l") and it is found on the text or map of every page referenced.
