This is a 5 Volume set that is, all things considered, the most valuable and authoritative work on Jewish history, culture, and traditions of the time of Jesus Christ. This work was made during an era without modern skepticism and religious speculation by people in Christendom. The work here contained actually represents views that are not found in the 21st and even the 20th centuries, giving us a view of what Biblical scholars thought and believed, before modern speculation infected and destroyed all rational Biblical exegesis and historical interpretation. To give this work honor simply because of its age is foolish, to discredit and to consider this work superseded by "modern research" is downright idiocy. If you keep a dispensational understanding of The Bible, and avoid Israel worship by remembering that Jerusalem is modern day spiritual Sodom and Gomorrah, you will avoid the pitfalls that most evangelicals fall into because of such works on Jewish history. The paper is fine, book quality is good.

at first I could not understand the 'five book set' with first and second divisions, but once I got that, I started reading volume I first division, I didn't understand it, it was nothing but reference to other books and documents. I have a 1,215 book library [all religious theology & growing], and I have the full set of the Babylonian Talmud, [ I purchased from CBD a few years ago] and it is very difficult to look up anything in this set, but I can now do it okay. anyway, I put that book up and started reading volume II first division, and its great. I am well satisfied and happy I bought this set, and at a very good savings also.

This set is fantastic! It really digs into the details of what life was like, in a Jewish context, during the time of Christ.

Don't listen to the negative review by Prof. David deSilva. He is approaching this era from a postmodern skeptical viewpoint which doubts Jesus even existed. If you want a Jesus Seminar perspective listen to Prof. deSilva. If you want a classic, well respected and thoroughly engaging work, from a Christian (Heaven forbid eh Prof. deSilva?) perspective, get this set!

I recently purchased this series for my 20 year old son who studies history of the Christian church and the Jewish people.

This a very well written series of books for anyone exlploring and searching for the time and history of Jesus and the Jewish people.

I only would prefer these books to be slightly larger with a slightly larger font. However their size makes them very easy to pack up and take with you anywhere you want to go and continue studying them.

An excellent value and addition to ones collection and library

The beautiful aspect of this series (aside from the incredible price for a handsome 5-vol. set) is the reality it brings home to the fulness of lives and rich detail of history on matters the Bible may state in a single sentence -- or refer to in a single word. For example, Herod (his whole family - the bad and the good, the complex family tree) comes alive. I've read the Bible cover-to-cover seven times, and someone like Herod and family, who the Bible just barely touches on, you realize the Bible was referring to a largely unscrupulous wide set of people and their interactions with Roman emporers, travels, building programs, Jewish religion interactions and so much more: Emil Schurer fills out and brings into stark three-dimension the reality of who the Bible refers to. I had no idea also of the intense and deep interactions of the Jews with Rome, sending embassies, negotiations for better living conditions and greater freedom of their worship -- and how they had greater religious freedom than most of Rome's provinces, until small-minded procurators with huge egos would ruin things for both Emperors & Jews. It is absolutely intense and exciting. If you're not a scholar, skip over the author's amazingly thorough bibliographies -- and even the footnotes (though there are some real gems hidden in them). I am very, very happy I have purchased and read this set of books.
