HERE BURNS MY CANDLE by Liz Curtis Higgs is a wonderfully written inspirational historical fiction set in 1745 Edinburgh,Scotland. It is written with depth, details, historical facts and dialog of the period. It is based on the Biblical characters Naomi and Ruth.

    A Scottish tale of love,forgiveness,loss,grief, secrets,faith,challenges,betrayal, love,

redemption, and finding your faith. It is full of Scottish lore, history, beliefs, and has a gut-wrenching plot. Like Naomi and Ruth in the Bible, Marjory(Naomi) and Elizabeth(Ruth),lose everything, have many secrets and must cope with lost and betrayal. This is a wonderfully written story based on Biblical characters, but set during 18th Century Scotland, during a time of turmoil and danger. It captured my attention from the beginning, detailing the characters, and has a gut-wrenching heartbreaking, get out of town finish. If you enjoy historical,Scottish lore, the old tales Scottland than you will enjoy this one also. This was a beautifully written story of Biblical and Scottish history woven together in an amazing inspirationsl story of love and betrayal.A truly MUST READ for all historical fans. This was a personal buy,but details can be find at WaterBrook Press, The Doubleday Religious Publishing Group and My Book Addiction and More.

I love, love, love this novel. The historical aspect of the novel was captivating and the book of Ruth was woven in so expertly that it surprised, but delighted me, when I realized that it was a retelling of the biblical story. I loved reading about how each women overcame difficult times and about the romances that were both heartwrenching and warm. I can't wait to read the next one. - Tina Ann Forkner

I could not put this book down and I'm not an avid reader as I have so many irons in the fire; BUT, this story was so "alive" and I were so "there" I didn't care what all I needed to accomplish.....I just sat down and read voraciously devouring page by page! Descriptors are so vivid.....I felt like I was living in a different time and place. Cannot...absolutely CANNOT....wait for the sequel coming in March!! Thank you Liz.....such an enjoyable read! I really enjoyed this book. I didn't know it was "loosely" based on the book for Ruth but was reading it and thought of the connection myself. THEN, saw that it is based on it. LOVED IT!! I can't wait for the second book!

Loved this story based on Ruth & Naomi! The Kerr family's journey through losses, trials and heartaches showcased the firm foundation that stands when all else unravels. Started out disliking Marjorie, but I was won over in the end, perhaps by seeing her through Elisabeth's gracious eyes. Enjoyed the history but also found a warning there, aren't we also easily won over by a "bonny" face and a hunger for change? Rich with authentic characters facing profound moral issues, Liz has crafted another beautiful depiction of the third strand essential to every relationship, Christ and His ever present grace.
