This commentary has been the most helpful commentary I have found in assisting me in preparing sermons with direct application for my church. An outstanding resource.

The NIVAC series varies more than most because of the diversity of the contributors and the awful format. However, there are several volumes that are outstanding in spite of the format and George Guthrie's work is clearly one of the best in the series. Dr. Guthrie has provided us with much help in understanding the structure of Hebrews which has a profound influence on how we understand the sermon/letter. There is very little Greek help in the work, but it is very enlightening when used along with a good technical commentary on the Greek text (e.g., Lane-WBC and Ellingworth-NIGTC). Guthrie has done a great job in making the best of a goofy format. Whoever came up with the idea for the NIVAC series should know that a good commentary does what this series was intended to do, but without butchering the exegesis. Having said that, I want to be clear that many of the volumes in this series are worth having due simply to the outstanding scholarship of the contributors.

Often Hebrews 1-10 are treated quickly or not at all when we look at Hebrews in our Sunday School classes or small groups. We read chapters 1-10 and then wonder: a) what does it mean and b) how can I apply what I read to 2017 life. George Guthrie has helped at both these points. The NIV Application Series does what it says it will do in the hands of this evangelical scholar; but it does more. Progressive revelation, type-antitype literary approaches, and OT-NT relationship are made clearer and more pertinent. More, Guthrie's treatment of the "warning passages" in Hebrews (2, 3-4, 6, 10) are helpful without demanding one theological position or another. I highly recommend this volume.

The author displays fine scholarship yet gives understandable material that is easily assimilated. The unique quality of explaining the Biblical text within the arena of the culture of when it was written then bridging that culture to our own contempoary setting makes this commentary extremely valuable in presenting important applications to a Christians daily life.

This is exactly the kind of commentary I wanted to use in teaching a special study in Hebrews. The NIV Application Commentary series format of Original Meaning, Bridging Contexts, and Contemporary Significance is very helpful in presenting not only the truth of Scripture, but the context for the original reader and the application for today's generation. The Contemporary Significance sections sometime seems a little long and labored, but I guess it depends on how you want to use the study. Guthrie's credentials in writing on the daunting letter of Hebrews are excellent, and he has a pleasant and enlightening style of writing.
