Product Description

Retired Amish newlyweds Emma and Lamar Miller have decided to buy a winter place in Sarasota, Florida. But it wouldn't feel like home if Emma didn't take her quilting materials and offer classes. Wounded and hurting people have a knack for finding their way to her classes for some quilting therapy: Jennifer, a pregnant new mom; Mike, a charter boat owner; Erika, a wheelchair-bound teen; Kim, a waitress; Noreen, a newly-retired widow; and BJ, an artist facing illness. And when Jan visits from Indiana, romance is also added to the class discussions.

    The Healing Quilt

Return of the Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club

    By Wanda E. Brunstetter

Emma is bored, she's not made for a life of leisure, searching the beach for shells. She misses her students and her quilting classes. When her husband Lamar suggests starting up classes in Florida, Emma agrees.

But this may be her most difficult class yet. One young woman, Erika, is paralyzed, wheelchair bound teen who sees no future for herself. Kim, a waitress, is determined not to fail yet again. Mike, who is at loose ends, is filling in for his wife. Jennifer is a soon-to-be mother whose husband is out of work. And then there is Noreen a widow at loose ends and BJ who is keeping his declining health a secret.

But 6 weeks of caring instruction and fellowship just might be what everyone needs. And Emma is always willing to offer a listening ear and a word of encouragement and prayer.

It is interesting that when each person looks outside of their own concerns that their attitudes improve and they actually are happier.

There are several former students who play important roles throughout, sharing what Emma had given them. And there is even romance in store for one former student and a current one.

This is a feel good book. There are problems, but they aren't drag you down depressing, If you want an enjoyable week-end read this is one you'll want to pick-up and then share with a friend.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review.

Emma and Lamar Miller purchased a winter home in Sarasota, Florida to get away from the harsh winters in Northern Indiana. Emma felt something missing in her life, and Lamar suggested she teach a quilting class to some of the local residents as she had done in Indiana. Her class filled rapidly with an assemblage of broken individuals. Each student carried his/her own personal and painful baggage, hoping that the quilting class would bring some diversion and healing. As in the past the Millers held each of their students up in prayer, and offered compassion and hope to each of their students in various ways.

Six new students are introduced in "The Healing Quilt," each with significant and distressing circumstances. A variety of serious life challenges affect the students and their relationships with one another. As in "The Tattered Quilt" the author brings characters from her past books into the story, creating continuity and blending the past with the present. As in the prequels to this book there is a richness of character in both Emma and Lamar that remains with the reader long after the story has ended. Mercy and Christian love are evident throughout as well as beauty in the descriptive elements surrounding the location. Realism and consequences are evidenced by the resultant events in the lives of these characters, and healing comes in a number of ways.

I had never read any of this author's books and really looked forward to it. In fact, since this was the 3rd book in a series, I decided to get the other two and read those before reading this one. However, I found that, even though it "tidied" up the story and helped keep the characters straight, this book could very well be read as a Stand Alone book. I have always enjoyed stories of the Amish, and since this was a series book about a stitching group, and I love to stitch, I thought this would be the perfect book for me. However, even though I enjoyed the book and the colorful characters and their individual lives, which had high drama in each, I did not find the story as compelling as I thought it might be. I don't know what I expected, but, It did not hold me riveted to wanting to read it every day, as some books do. It was a sweet story, and it followed the lives of the characters in a fashion that wrapped up their problems neatly, but, for me, it was lacking.

I received this book from bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review.

The Healing Quilt is the third installment of The Hand Stitched Amish Quilting Club series. I cannot say enough how much I love this series. I love the new group of unlikely quilting students. I was so excited when I read Jan from book one make a comeback in this book. Jan is my favorite character and love how he became an important character in this book as well.

Emma and Lamar are such a good couple and they are so helpful with their students' lives. They are just so cute.

I highly recommend this book, as well as, the first two books of the series.

    5+ stars.
