Anyone who has ever been part of a church has most likely gone through a church hurt. If you haven't, you probably know someone who has had a bitter experience. New York Times bestselling author Stephen Mansfield suffered with his own church pain when he was a pastor; In the pages of Healing Your Church Hurt ( previously published as ReChurch), he walks us through, not only his own pain, but gives examples of others who have experienced this.

Whether you were in a position of leadership, or an attendee who chose to not be involved with other church activities, or somewhere in between, the chances of being hurt are present, and can make a powerful impact. Hurts do not have to be a permanent wedge between you and the church or your relationship with God. It also does not matter whether you were wronged, or the one who caused the problem; the point is to seek out the place where you are serving God for His pleasure. We too often set our expectations on what feels right to us, and then blame the church when others fail to reach our standards and wants. I especially liked the chapter that discussed what attitude you should have if it does become necessary for you to find another community of believers to join. The pastor, the building, the music, the opportunities, etc---each may make for your happiness, but, what happens when circumstances change? What are you looking for when you seek another church? More importantly, are you working through your pain and using this as growth and maturity? Stephen looks at church hurts from a variety of angles and offers comfort and constructive criticism in order to facilitate healing.

This book is great whether it is you going through the hurt and healing process, or to give to another who needs it.

This particular book was on a very personal matter; something that I have gone through myself... feeling hurt by the Church. As I whipped through the book fairly fast, I realized how much I had to go in healing the church hurt that I had endured. Stephen Mansfield's book (previously published as ReChurch)was such a great help in doing so. I was able to move forward in forgiveness and reconciliation with God's Church. The book was practical, powerful, and well written. The author, a former pastor and now a New York Times Bestselling author, has seen and experienced great "Church hurt" himself. He writes about how he has dealt with it and the advice he has to give to others, by walking you through it.He also shares what others have gone through. The book is full of hope and insight, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any believer who is still trying to heal from something that they have gone through at the hands of the church, or to anyone who hasn't been in the Church for months or years because of what they went through. The book is a beautiful glimpse of the grace that Christ has given to us so freely, and how we should extend that same grace to another. I can guarantee that this book will of some help in taking the next steps in learning how to deal with Church hurt...Also a good gift to give to someone who has been hurt by the Church

I forgot to mention that Tyndale has graciously provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

A wonderful book for me. I was in a horrible situation. A very Big church hurt. This book helped me get through it and prepare for those to come. It was extremely helpful and not afraid to discuss what all of us have experienced. You cannot go to church long without someone at the wrong time getting in your face who's opinion means absolutely nothing. Yes these hurts come from people we respect but why should we. These questions helped me with the reality of church. We are not to judge others but have the right to use good judgement. This book is easy to read. Fits in your back pocket. You will gain some helpful tips to share with others. Near the end is a blueprint of the questions we need to ask in church and when looking to join a church. Go beyond the entertainment. Go beyond your feeling because 9 out of 10 times our feelings are wrong. The author shows you how to apply scripture in the healing process as well in verifying you are in fact in the right church for you. If not he gives a scripture based guide in searching for a church that meets your needs and prepares you for the work of the Kingdom.

Healing Your Church Hurt by Stephen Mansfield was a much better book than I was expecting. It is not a book that will help all of your personal church problems, nor is it a book that will magically make you feel completely better about something that has happened to upset you in the church. Mansfield adds a touch of humor to his writing but gets straight to the point, he doesn't sugarcoat anything. Some parts of the book I found more interesting than others but only because I was reading from my personal perspective.

A sentence that made me think was, "Christianity is not the absence of stupidity and hurt. Christianity is the message of a God who uses our stupidity and hurt to make us what we are destined to be".

He also takes note of something that I think is very true that I had never thought about. "One of the most endearing features of the Bible is how God chose to portray people without apology in their raw and fallen state". This is so true when you think about all of the different people God talks about in the Bible. David-a liar, murderer, and so on.

Mansfield brings up a lot of new ways to think about things, not change what happened, but to see things in a different perspective.

Healing Your Church Hurt is a thought provoking read if not anything else.
