"What in the World is Going On?" by Dr. David Jeremiah makes the case that we are living in the Biblically prophesied last days. Providing a scary, no-nonsense commentary on recent world events, this book motivates the reader to shrug-off society's prevailing apathy and evaluate truth vs. falsehood, good vs. evil, and purpose vs. selfish indulgence. Regardless of whether you agree with Jeremiah's conclusions, the reading of this book prompts examination of self and the world we live in.

Strengths: Jeremiah examines world events with stark candor; which is a refreshing change from the prevailing spin of 'I'm OK, you're OK' and 'world peace'. Also, he included much-needed proposals of a Christian response in light of his heavy conclusions.

Weaknesses: The subtitle is easily misleading, 'Ten Prophetic Clues You Cannot Afford to Ignore". Only about half the book addresses 'clues' that could be considered evident: Israel, Oil, The European Union, Islamic Terrorism, and the re-emergence of Russian power. The remaining 'clues' are more speculative and future-looking: the role of America, the Rapture, the Antichrist, Armageddon, and the return of Jesus Christ.

Bottom Line: Paul admonishes Roman believers to 'know the time' and 'awake out of sleep', "for our salvation is nearer than when we first believed" (Rom. 13:11). Dr. Jeremiah urges the same for believers today along with these sentiments: "Our trust has never been in governments, civilizations or cultures", "we have always put our trust in the One who stands above institutions, above history, and even above time itself...", "only He is worthy of our allegiance." (pg. 139)

I rarely read modern era books dealing with Biblical prophecy, for at best they tend to be alarmist and eventually proven wrong; at worst they are a catalyst for radical new faith movements. Dr. Jeremiahs 2008 book, which examines world news and compares events to 10 prophetic clues, falls in between. His use of somewhat dated research to back up claims that focus on the worldwide race to the end times liberally quote from scholarly and world leader papers. I keep as a test Jesuss admonition to not believe other peoples claims to see his return; Dr. Jeremiah doesnt push a particular date or time. The ten prophetic clues begin with the most obvious: Israel became a nation. In fact, most of the prophecies Dr. Jeremiah attempts to examine in light of modern events deals with natural disasters and the much-blessed Nobel-prize-winning Jews. Why does America prosper? Because were nice to Israel which will prove to have the greatest oil reserves on the planet. The ensuing attempt to control that oil will culminate in the battle of Armageddon. The author also claims that Israel is the geopolitical center of the world and attempts to make the EU the rebirth of the Roman Empire. He makes several comments about the Muslim goal to control the world and how fanatical terrorists have already settled and gained influence in Europe and America; in fact, America will one day have the Islamic flag over the White House. America will fall and not have enough people left to work as a nation after the rapture, even though we started out as a nation founded on Godly principles. Somewhat alarming, though of course those whose faith rests securely on Christ have nothing to worry about. What does all this mean for the average American, or any citizen of the world? Be prepared, be ready, continue to watch for the return of Christ and the end of life on earth. Every believer should be doing that anyway.

I tend to be skeptical of any book discussing prophecy and end times, but this one exceeded my expectations. Instead of fear-mongering propaganda, Jeremiah gives the facts and lets you interpret them for yourself. The entire book has its foundation in the Bible and relevant Scripture is given through each chapter. In addition to Jeremiah's thorough discussion of the Rapture and Tribulation period, he also covers Jewish history and Islamic practices.Critical of those who attempt to pinpoint the exact hour of Christ's return and those who try to determine the identity of the antiChrist, this book focuses on relating current events to Biblical scriptures, and encouraging us to live for Christ until His return.Jeremiah's writing captured my attention from the first page and held it until the last. "What In The World Is Going On?" gives believers continued hope for the second coming of Christ.

Originally produced as a series of sermons, Dr. Jeremiah compiles them into this book which has now been released or re-released in paperback. Many followers of interpreting the signs of the times will find explanations of how Dr. Jeremiah sees currents events insightful. Although the events mentioned in this book are now several years old some of the repercussions persist into the present. He presents his case clearly and with endnotes to credit his sources. The book ends with an alliterative list of activities the believer needs to be about while they are waiting for the prophecies to fulfill. Those few pages are probably the best in the book, I think. I found much of the rest speculative and of little value. The old discussions about who Gog and Magog might be have been around for quite a while. The discussion of Islam could lead to less than charitable acts against the people who profess that particular religion. And yes, I am well aware of their stated goals concerning the non-Islam world. The final diagnosis of how to counter the Islamic world was to make Christians out of Muslims (pg 94). Sounds pretty familiar. Since when do we make Christians of people?Overall I cannot recommend this book as it does not serve to edify the saints, but to incite them, to produce a focus on events and interpretations of the future and not on Christ Himself. This book was provided by BookSneeze in exchange for this review.
