What a story!! Martin tells it with such honest emotion and makes you live it with him...love that he was in the hands of the Father all through his life, and felt HIS presence there. With no recriminations he shares his life, and wraps up his "life so far..." with a fairy tale ending come true. Hoping his book is read far and wide and all of us learn to look into the eyes of those around us whoever they are and see their humanity shining through. God bless him all the days of his life, and I thank him for writing this book.

A good book is one that makes an impact on the readers, and this book fits the bill. I am now deeply aware of the struggles of people who has some kind of physical/mental disabilities , and it has kindled in me a desire to show God's love to them in whatever way I can . This book talks about God in spare words but in a powerful way ( " I was completely entombed. The only person who knew there was a boy within the useless shell was God, and I had no idea why I felt His presence so strongly..... Somehow I instinctively knew that He was with me....At times it felt confusing to be surrounded by people, utterly alone and yet aware that God was my companion. Yet my faith didn't waver. He was as present to me as air, as constant as breathing "). I can't put this book down, and while reading it I had mixed feelings: appalled at how some caregivers abused him, thankful for the kind & compassionate ones, humbled by his family's sacrifices especially his Dad, inspired by the lack of hate & bitterness on Martin's part, and challenged by Joanna's unconditional love. This book helps to remind us of our humanity and of our unseen yet ever present God. Thank you, Martin Pistorious for writing this, and thank you Nelson Books for publishing this . I will highly recommend this book to everyone in our church, particularly the Youth Group and will order a few copies for the church library.

I just finished reading this book and was amazed from cover to cover. Every person (including all health care workers) who cares for someone who is unable to communicate should read this book. Appearances can be deceiving. Someone may appear to be unaware of what is going on around them, but may in fact be aware of everything. Talk to them, read to them, turn the TV on to material appropriate for their age, play music for them, don't just leave them in total silence and darkness.

I work in the field of caring for the developmentally disabled. This book has helped remind me that I make a difference on how I treat those in my care, and is a reminder on how we in the health care field NEED to view for those we care for.

I have even bought extra copies for co-workers to read and pass around. I truly believe EVERY person who works in the field of caring for persons with disabilities (that includes nursing home staff) SHOULD read this book!

There ARE good workers out there... I have seen MANY in my 30 yrs in human services.. Please do not think as us care givers as abusive and uncaring about the people we care for, as some of Martin's were. For me they stood out in the book..probably because I was appalled at some of their behavior! (but yes, I have seen my share of those few who should not be working in this field...)

But, (after my little rant) It is a VERY INTERESTING book, for ALL to read!

Most of us cant begin to grasp what its like to have no physical control of our bodies. Nor can we fully comprehend the horror and painful realities someone, with a fully intact mind, experiences encased in one of these silent shells.

For someone who went fourteen years unable to express his emotions, Martin Pistorius pushes full throttle, and exquisitely conveys them all in his book. I was grateful for the humorous spots, especially after reading the difficult passages.

At times, I cringed at what Martin had to endure. I believe a note for Reader Discretion is needed for the chapter titled, Lurking in Plain Sight. I hated reading itand rightly so. And yet, had Martin not been so painfully transparent about his darkest days of torture, his story would be incomplete. Nor would I have fully appreciated his joy when he survived and overcame.

This is not an overtly Christian book. There are two or three points of faith sharedbut they are profoundly powerful. The most amazing one to me is the one when Martin shares his knowledge of Gods presence with him. He never had Christian training prior to his illness. Nevertheless, when his mind awoke, inside the shell of his unresponsive body, he knew God was there with him. Martin sharing this page-long realization is one of my favorite parts of the entire book.

Martin's life changed all because of one person noticing a flicker of life in him and opening a door of opportunity. Martin expresses appreciation to many but he is certain of the One he owes the most gratitude.

I read a May 2015 interview with "Christianity Today," Martin said,

Without the Lord, I would not be here today. I have no doubt that it was only his intervention that saved me. It is only through God that I have found my voice.

This book inspires me to take time to look more intentionally at peopleespecially those who seemingly fly under the radar. You dont have to have a health condition to feel invisible.

Due to the content, I think this book is best suited for adults. Martin does not sugar-coat what he experienced as a young teen. There are disturbing parts that ripped at my soul and I hope I can forget. But, overall, there are messages I hope I will always remember.

Martin Pistorius story will take you into the uncomfortable pit of darkness and encourage you to grasp hold of life-giving faith, hope, and love.
