Product Description

Nineteen year old Zhang and his family scratch out an existence, with barely enough to eat, yet fear is always presnt that life could be much worse. Zhang's father doesn't show the expected respect for the newly departed leader, Kim 11-Sung, which could mean internment for the family in a work camp if his political view becomes known outside their meager walls.

Zhang chooses to flee from North Korea to China with his best friend and there is led to Christ. Does he dare return to his family and share his newly found faith?

This is a very good novel and very accurate to the representation of how things are in terms of the strange relationships between North and South Korea, and especially China. The fact that China is seen as so liberal and free thinking to the main character, Zhang, is a testament to how severe conditions are in North Korea. My knowledge of the area is firsthand and I was very impressed with the accuracy. I am currently using this text as a supplement to a contemporary cultures class I am teaching and will be using it again as an optional read for a world history course next year. While a fictional account, it is engaging for readers and blatantly honest. Its Christian approach is very relevant to the fight for religious freedom in the area.

This was a simple read, but very informative. Would recommend it to those that are interested in the persecuted Christian people around this world.

I have not finished the book yet but am being pulled through it so it won't be long. I don't know much about the culture or struggles of the peoples where having a Bible is risking death. This book is teaching me how blessed we are in the US to be able to do almost anything and have almost anything we want and everything we need. I hope others will read this book and pray for those who don't even know enough to pray.
