The sad undercurrent of consequences from Lady Whittaker's adultery is the foundation of this story, not Cassandra and Geoffrey. What troubled me was Lady Whittaker's casual attitude toward her sin and its consequences. Yes, as she states, "...it was long ago forgiven by God and thus to be forgotten." But, she and her husband never addressed her adultery; so others who were greatly impacted could neither forgive nor forget. This negatively colored the entire story. God's forgiveness is full for each of us; yet we're accountable for the consequences of our sin and must address them in a timely manner - as this story points out.
