VicsMediaRoomIrvine, CAAge: 55-65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5A Doctor, A Cook, Murder Attempts and RomanceOctober 7, 2013VicsMediaRoomIrvine, CAAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Mary Connealy in her new book, "Fired Up" Book Two in the Trouble In Texas series published by Bethany House Publishers takes us into the life of Glynna Greer.
From the back cover: When a doctor who attracts danger falls for a cook determined to make it on her own, there's going to be trouble in Texas!
Glynna Greer came west as a mail-order bride and ended up in a bad situation. Now her husband, Flint, is dead, and she's determined to make a go of it on her own. In a town full of men, Glynna decides she can support her two children by opening a diner-never mind that cooking is not her greatest talent.
Dare Riker is a doctor who saves lives, but someone seems determined to end his. It may have something to do with the traitors he dealt with during the Civil War, or it might be related to the recent incident with Flint Greer and the ranch. Whoever the culprit is, he or she seems really fired up, and Dare can't let his guard down for a moment-which is a challenge, since right now he's trying to win the heart of the recently widowed Glynna.
Though his doctoring business is booming due to Glynna's questionable cooking, Dare seems to encounter unexpected dangers wherever he goes. There's the avalanche. And the fire. And then the shadowy figure with a knife. Can Dare survive it all long enough to convince Glynna to take another chance on love?
Dare thinks he should not be a doctor anymore however there is always someone who needs his medical help. Glynna has given up on men but Dare always seems to be around. Can these two work out their differences and get together before someone actually kills Dare? "Fired Up" is a mystery as we have no idea of who the potential killer is and it is a study in do we use the talents that God has given us or do we waste them away? It is also a romance. Ms. Connealy is a very talented writer who gives us wonderful characters that we really come to care about. "Fired Up" is filled with excitement and humor and Wild West action.

MarianneWanham, AlbertaAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5an excellent romantic comedyOctober 6, 2013MarianneWanham, AlbertaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is not a time travel book, but I took another enjoyable Time Travel trip into 1868 Texas where it seems trouble is always brewing. This is the second novel in the Trouble in Texas series following the novel Swept Up, both by Mary Connealy. I did read the first one, but I do not think it necessary as the incidents in the first book are not only alluded to but briefly explained so that those that have read the first book are reminded of the happenings there while those that have not read it are brought up to speed in a seamless manner. The characters of the first book are very much present in this one, what with the men being a part of the Regulators. Cowboys and rustlers abound, but the story is also one of romantic comedy, which Mary does extremely well. She uses words to her advantage, and the imagery is so vivid you can almost smell the smoke, hear the clatter of the horses hooves, feel the sand in your eyes and see the fear in Janey's eyes. I enjoyed this one very much, as I do all of Mary's novels, and will be looking for the 'gang's' next adventures.

KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Unstoppable Laughter & Fast-Paced ActionOctober 5, 2013KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book crept up to the top of my TBR pile right when I needed a good long laugh and Fired Up has a belly full of laughter brimming from its pages. Just what the doctor ordered. :-) Connealy has a unique comedic pacing that I haven't found anywhere else -- one liners come fast and furious, oozing dry wit and absurdity and always leave me chuckling out loud or snorting in a most unladylike fashion. Her droll humour has me smiling even after the book is finished.
The second in the Trouble in Texas series, Fired Up reads well as a standalone, but Connealy fans will be happy to get reacquainted with some beloved characters from Swept Away. And Seekerville followers will enjoy the literary nod to the naming of some heroes and heroines.
Fast-paced action, a muddled romance and some wild west suspense create the ambiance of a classic TV Western -- only a Connealy read is all techno-colour, not just black and white. A great escape read that will uplift as much as it makes your laugh. -
TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This book was just so much fun!September 29, 2013TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5This book was just so much fun! I enjoyed every page.
Like it's predecessor, Swept Away, Fired Up is a wild, dangerous, and humorous ride in a small Texas town in the late 1860's.
The book starts with an avalanche of rocks that nearly takes out most of the main characters and continues on with a fire, a measles epidemic, bellyaches from Glynna's cooking, a crazy woman with a knife, shootouts, an angry boy, and a whirlwind sister's arrival. All of it liberally sprinkled with romance and some of the funniest lines and expressions I have read in quite awhile.
This book had a little more mystery in it which I found very enjoyable. Someone is trying to kill Dare and the big question is: who could hate him that much? He's got a few possibilities but nothing concrete. So he winds up trying to balance preserving his own life, doctoring the townspeople, romancing an unwilling Glynna, trying to win over her children, and a crisis in believing he was meant to be a doctor.
Sure, the doctor has a full plate, but so does Glynna. Between a very angry son and a silent daughter, trying to run a diner, an unbalanced cook, doctoring Dare, trying not to fall for the aforementioned doctor, and dodging rocks and a killer; she hardly has time to deal with her own problems from 2 bad marriages and trying to regain some faith, in men and God.
One of the things I like about Mary Connealy's writing is how she introduces us to the characters in the next book, slowly setting up the story for them to take over as the hero and heroine. Not only that, but characters from the previous book make their appearances as well. In Swept Away we read Luke and Ruthie's story and were introduced to Dare and Glynna, Fired Up focuses on them but starts setting up Vince and, what I am expecting, Jonas's sister Tina for book 3.
Four friends bound together by their experiences in Andersonville Prison will do whatever it takes to help each other, right the wrongs done by evil men, help those in trouble, and saving a damsel or two in distress.
Don't miss the second book in the Trouble In Texas series, Fired Up is a must read!

Jael KenneyLachute,QCAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I can hardly wait for the next one to come out!September 26, 2013Jael KenneyLachute,QCAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The second in her newest series, "Fired Up" is full of adventure, mayhem, and romance. Dr. Dare Riker, wonders if he should really keep calling himself one—he doesn't have a license—anyways, he might not be around much longer: if someone gets their wish. Glynna is a woman with two too many last names and she's not looking to add on another. But circumstances keep throwing them together, and if they can catch a murderer before they succeed, their love just might have a chance of survival.
This series (Trouble in Texas) follows four friends, whose friendship was forged when they banded together to help others survive the danger and suffering in a Civil War prison camp; and it was stamped with the name "Regulators". Having survived the Civil War, these men are ready to make new lives for themselves; but danger, intrigue (and women!) keep dogging their steps.
One thing I appreciate about Mary Connealy is how she draws connections between series and between the books in a series. This series is loosely related to the Kincaid brothers series (Luke Stone is the brother of Callie Kincaid, the wife Seth Kincaid forgot he had: Kincaid Brothers series book #3 ). Also, her romances are more believable because she introduces the players of the next book in the previous one, giving a wider perspective to her characters as readers see them (and their romances) develop over the course of more than one book. (She also does this with her Montana Marriages series and her series Sophie's Daughters).
On another note, it is nice to see her use variety in both her settings and characters. Her characters have well-developed backgrounds, giving readers a deeper understanding of motives and emotions, but are told in such a way so as not to overshadow the main plot of each book. I really enjoy her stories and would honestly be hard-pressed to pick a favourite: they are all well-thought out and well-delivered. I suppose my favourite would be whichever one I am reading at the time. After reading the first two books, I can hardly wait for the next one to come out!
Thank you to Net Galley (https://www.netgalley.com) and Bethany House for providing me with an advance copy of this great book to read and review.
