I am not a fan for Beverly Lewis books, but out of curiosity, I picked up this book to read. And loved it. Once I started reading I just couldn't put it down. So much happened in the book - so many lives become intertwined. Secrecy, finding out who she really is and what she wants to do, learning to pursue ones dreams and follow one's heart instead of living out other peoples' plans for you - all these things spoke right to me. Because of my love for music, I could put myself right into the heroine's shoes - I could understand exactly how she felt performing music and trying to follow her heart. Definitely a good read for anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, likes to read some romance - without getting too 'mushy', and for those who love music.

Beverly Lewis is well known for her insightful portrayal of Amish living. Her stories are always vivid, well written and fascinating. In "The Fiddler," Englisher Amelia is a professional Concert fiddler. She has an exciting life and a loving family. Somehow, she ends up in an out of the way area and meets an Old Order Amish man, Michael. He is young and struggling with whether or not he wants to join the Amish church. The two form a friendship. We read about Amelia staying with the Amish for a time and seeing it all through her eyes. We also learn about some of the antics of the Amish youth, during their time of deciding whether they will join the church, or leave it for the English world. I was so saddened to read that some of the young people actually were using Facebook! It shocked me. There is something sweet, nostalgic, and precious about the Amish way of life - it is almost untouched and innocent. It is a life that many crave. While reading this story, you sense that you are there, living among them. There is a sense of peace that comes through which makes the story a delight to read. Amelia's English life is also fascinating. Her classical music endeavors is calming and a nice contrast to Amish life. Overall, it is a valuable, interesting story.

Englisher Amelia Devries a renowned violinist finds herself lost in a heavy down pour while returning to Columbus, Ohio, on her way home after playing, as a guest fiddler, for a small country band, one of the warm-up gigs to Tim McGraw. What fun she had! Amelia was doing this for fun and relaxation unbeknownst to her family, manager and boyfriend. They would not be happy if they found out what she was doing.

Michael Hostetler a young Amishman had just stormed out of his parent's home after another fight with his father over settling down and joining the church. His father argued with him; you have one foot in the world and the other foot in the church. Don't come back home until you decide. Michael ended up in a small cabin that was hidden away in the woods miles from his home. He wanted to make sure his father wouldn't find him.

Amelia, after driving what seemed miles and miles ended up with a flat tire in the drive way of the cabin Michael was staying in. It was so dark and raining so hard that she couldn't see the cabin. She planned on spending the night in her car so she decided to take her fiddle out and play a few tunes to make herself feel a little better since it looked as though this is where she'd be spending the night. After some time had past she thought she saw a light shining in the woods. Was that a place where she could seek shelter? Should she stay put until morning?

This book was about making your own decisions in life. We shouldn't live our life on how others feel we should live it. We have to follow God's calling and leading. Do we sacrifice our paths to make others happy or do we follow God's path? These were some tough choices that Amelia and Michael had to make. Would they make the right ones?

Once again Beverly Lewis penned another great Christian fiction book. God is always first and foremost in her writings and I praise Him for that. I can't wait to read The Bridesmaid, Book 2 in the Home to Hickory Hollow series.

In her new book, Beverly Lewis has created an intriguing blend of the simple and natural and the disciplined and artistic. In "The Fiddler" Lewis takes readers in a new direction. She examines the musical gifts of the highly talented Amelia "Amy" DeVries and her struggle to discover a more fulfilling life in the midst of her demanding musical career. Amy faces the universal dilemma of finding her own way or remaining committed to the destiny her father has envisioned for her as a dedicated concert violinist. A thunderstorm serves as the catalyst to propel her into a new world. Her yearning for self-expression and a fuller life lead her to a young Amish man who is seeking freedom from the disciplined and rather restrictive Amish culture in which he lives. Like Amy, he is torn between following the promptings of his heart and his loyalty to his family. These two unlikely persons become instrumental in helping one another craft a new life. It is a most enjoyable read.

I am not a great fan of Amish fiction but the trailer for this book intrigued me. Both Amelia and Michael are very likeable main characters who bond because they are struggling with the decision to make some changes in their lives. When I finished the book, my first thought was "what a beautiful love story." It was not typical romantic fiction though because I don't think there was even one kiss between them, yet I still felt the romance. I think it is a tribute to Beverly Lewis' skill as a writer.
