Fatal Exchange is Book 2 in the Southern Crime series. It can definitely be read alone but is much better understood and appreciated if read as a series in order. This book deals with a school teacher who comes from a family of policeman. She has a student who is having family problems and has been coming to talk to her about them. The book deals with kidnapping, hostages, faith and trust. This book contains mystery, suspense, and romance. It deals with the life of being a teacher and law-enforcement agent in today's world. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I received this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Detective Mason Taylor is very conflicted. His father, who abandoned him and his brothers, is dying and his family wants him to come home before it is too late. He is also under investigation by his department for being the mole who lead to the death of his best friend and fellow officer, Michael Hunt. With ticket in hand to travel to Denver, Mason received a phone call from a young man who Mason had been mentoring. Rafael is a good student and a young man who is trying desperately to help his family move on to a better life. Rafaels younger brother has been kidnapped by a group of drug dealers who are demanding a large ransom. In an effort to help Rafael, Mason contacts Emily Hunt, Rafaels teacher. Emily is also the sister of his deceased friend, Michael. Things quickly escalate. Rafael is at the school, holding Emily and a group of her students hostage, including her niece. It appears to Emily that Rafael is being controlled by someone, but who? Can Mason save Rafael from himself and rescue Emily? Can Mason, a new believer, trust God to work through him to help those he has come to care for?

Fatal Exchange is an exciting mystery. Just when you think things are resolved, a new difficulty springs up. This is the second the Southern Crimes series with Dangerous Passage, the first novel ,earning honors at the Christy Awards. Fatal Exchange can be read as a standalone mystery, but I enjoyed it so much that I went back and bought the first book. The third book is due out next Spring and I eagerly await it. Any fan of Dee Henderson, Terri Blackstock, or DiAnn Mills will enjoy this author.

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I LOVED this book. The pacing is fast -- 85% of the plot happens in one day. It is tightly woven with an intricate plot. The action doesn't slow until the end. By that point, the characters need a chance to catch their breath. There is a romance, and because of the hero and heroine's past, it works even under the very tight timeline. The Christian thread only enhances the story. I loved this romantic suspense and the way it weaves in characters from a prior novel. It stands on its own and has me itching to read the next Lisa Harris novel.

High school teacher Emily Hunt wanted a safe career unlike her brother and sister, who followed in their father's footsteps and became cops. Emily has known Mason Taylor ever since he became her brother Michael's partner and best friend. Mason has wanted to go out with Emily since he met her, but she turned him down because she did not want to date a cop and because he did not share her faith.

Mason has befriended one of Emily's students, Rafael Cerda, having grown up with the same type of childhood. When Rafael's brother is kidnapped for ransom by a drug cartel, he goes to Mason for help. Before Mason can help him, Rafael's mother is also kidnapped and the ransom increased. Not having the money to pay, he is instructed to hold his classmates hostage, forcing their wealthy parents to pay the ransom instead. Mason and Emily must work together to end the situation without anyone getting hurt.

Lisa Harris continues her Southern Crimes series filled with suspense, faith, and romance. Emily and Mason's story was great. Even though Emily was attracted to Mason upon first meeting him as well, I liked the fact she didn't waver from her morals and values and then, after they shared the same faith, she allowed herself to see the man beneath his chosen career.

Fatal Exchange, the second book in Harriss Southern Crimes series, features the second Hunt sibling, Emily. Emily enjoys living a simple life as a school teacher trying to make a difference in the lives of the students she teaches at an elite private school. However, she is unwittingly thrust into a volatile situation when one of her students pulls a gun on his classmates holding them hostage. Mason Taylor, an undercover cop and former best friend to Emilys brother, Michael, has been mentoring the at-risk young man now holding Emily and her students hostage. He discovers that Rafaels actions stem from a desperate attempt to raise ransom money for his brother who has been kidnapped by a drug cartel threatening to kill him if the ransom is not paid. Although Emilys detective sister, Avery, suspects Mason is somehow responsible for their brothers death, Emily feels she can trust Mason and leans on him to walk her through the hostage situation. Mason not only has to earn both Emily and Rafaels trust in order to end the hostage standoff, he also has to use his detective skills to get to the bottom of who is behind the drug cartel crimes.

The plot of Fatal Exchange had many twists and turns that I wasnt expecting creating a very exciting read! Harris did a noteworthy job detailing the high-strung, intense emotions felt by all during the hostage and kidnapping scenarios. I also liked that Mason had an opportunity to regain the Hunt familys trust after having his integrity slaughtered by Avery in Dangerous Passage. And of course, I have to mention the romance between Mason and Emily. I thought it was sweet that Mason still had feelings for Emily after all these years even after she rejected his request for a date in college. I was glad to learn the reason behind Emilys earlier rejection was because of Masons lack of faith, and that now that he became a Christian it was revealed that Emily still had feelings for him, too. Cue the awe, how sweet now!
