I'll be honest and say that when I first requested Fatal Distractions by Kay Arthur and David and BJ Lawson for review, I thought it was an actual chapter-book. When I got it I realized it was a Bible study guide, so it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

However, I went ahead and did the study, and I have to say I thought it was really good. This is a study guide that covers six of the seven deadly sins - pride, anger, jealousy, gluttony, slothfulness, and greed. When I first saw that list I subconsciously checked a few of them off in my head as things that wouldn't really be applicable to me.

But Arthur and the Lawson's do a great job of putting together Bible passages and questions to really make you search yourself to see if any of these sins might be something that is sneaking into your day-to-day. I found so many practical applications and challenges through doing this study, so even though it wasn't what I was expecting when I first ordered it, I ended up getting a lot out of it.

I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a personal Bible study, and I do think it would be great as a group study too, because as the cover says, it really is a "no homework" Bible study guide. I just wish I could have spent a little more time on it! I had to read it in a bit of a hurry so I could post this review.

Note: I received this book for free from Waterbrook Multonomah Publishing Group as part of their Blogging For Books program in exchange for this review. This is my honest opinion.

As a Sunday School teacher for middle adults, I am always on the look out for new study materials. This book, which is one in a series of 40 minute Bible studies, is a great resource and one I will be using for my class. I like the format, which doesn't require buying additional materials for the students, and yet allows for a great Bible study. I also really like the materials, which focus on an area that is not too broad, but has great application for Christians as they walk with Jesus every day.

I have read through the book, and I enjoy the intertwining of the Old and New Testament principles — I firmly believe that the Old Testament contains great insight for Christian living, and I am always pleased to find a study that builds a picture of faithful life from the entire Bible, not just a focus on the New Testament without a glimpse into the underlining principles throughout the Word. I like the fresh writing style, and the insight into the reasons that Christians struggle with sin — we have an enemy in Satan, and we battle our own flesh as well, all things that the Holy Spirit helps us overcome.

I think sometimes longer term Christians think they don't struggle with the same kind of sins that others do, and yet as I read this study, I certainly saw instances where my heart was not as on target as I thought it was. There are some really great components to the study that build introspection and focus on the heart of the believer. The 40 minute Bible study Fatal Distractions: Conquering Destructive Temptations is a great resource, and one I look forward to using with my unique group of adult Christians. I am so glad that God has called some to write studies that engage people in His Word, and build the Kingdom.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255

I like the fact that the 40 minute studies are self contained and compact. All you need is a pen. It is also good practice as I am learning to mark the text in the inductive study method. This is especially nice for anyone hesitant to mark up their own Bible.

Our ladies Bible study group is really enjoying this study. It's probing deep into our hearts and allowing God's Word to convict us and lead us. I recommend this for individual or any group study.
