Tell us a little about yourself. I am a homeschool mom of three (ages 11, 9, and 9) who loves to study history, art, literature, and science with my children. I am an airbrush artist and illustrator who has illustrated several children's books for an educational publisher and have started my own publishing company, Figures In Motion. We publish children's history and science activity books. Our books have won national awards for educational and publishing excellence.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to create a hands-on activity for my children that would reinforce the history lessons and biographies that we were reading. My sons were younger and could not write narration pages for the history lesson, but I wanted to include them in a project. My older daughter didn't want to be left out of the fun so we all made movable action figures together.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? It's my desire that children will enjoy creating and playing with these figures while learning about the people who shaped history. These are real people with captivating stories. We also hope that these hands-on activities will engage children with different learning styles to have an activity that reinforces their lesson. We selected these figures so that they could be used with any history curriculum.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I have been encouraged by parents and children who also enjoy making these figures. I have given presentations and local libraries and have been told by parents that their son or daughter wants to read and learn more about the historic person after making a moving figure of them. Seeing children act out history is rewarding!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? While my current work is rendered digitally using Adobe Illustrator/InDesign, I also like to paint realistically. Rembrandt and the Dutch painters, Durer, David, and Fantin Latour are some of my favorite artists.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Famous Figures of the American Revolution and Famous Figures of Medieval Times are scheduled for publication in 2011.
