I have the MacArthur ESV Study Bible in the Personal Size edition but I now have Bi-Focals and needed to up-size. I thought about getting the new Zondervan NIV Study Bible (2015) - but I felt that the ESV translation was much more accurate. It was the hard choice though and I was really attracted by the huge amount of notes in the new Zondervan NIV Study Bible - but the ESV is the best translation out there right now.

Both the ESV Study Bible (2007) and the MacArthur ESV Study Bible have a sewn binding and are not cheaply glued in like Thomas Nelson Bibles are. The pages should hold together even with years of dogged use. They lay open nicely too and after you break the leather in a little they should hang in your hand properly when you read them. As always get the best quality of leather you can afford as that part of the Bible gets all the contact roughness in day to day handling.

Caveat Emptor: I have noticed a cheapening of the paper quality over the years since the First Edition of the ESV Study Bible (2007) came out. The earlier Crossway Bibles were printed in the USA and I really think they pulled out all the stops back then to try and trump Zondervan's best selling NIV Study Bible (1984) in overall quality of construction. However after Crossway succeeded in capturing a HUGE chunk of the Bible Publishing market from Zondervan with the ESV Study Bible - I think they let us all down and got cheap. The paper quality of current Crossway Bibles is NOT up to the standards of their earlier products. Whether it was just plain economic necessity or more likely gross Corporate greed is anyone's guess. I just want you to be aware of this change before you buy. So when you get a 2018 printing you most likely will get a thinner lesser quality of paper with some ghosting. I urge you to use colored pencils and NOT magic marker highlighters if you need to mark your Bible up.

As far as MacArthur's study notes think it is only fair to say that it was NOT only John MacArthur alone who prepared and researched the notes. John MacArthur is the founder and president of Master's Seminary and many of his top Bible scholars and lecturers aided in the production of the notes and research that went into this Study Bible. Of course John MacArthur is Chief Editor but he had a lot of well trained and scholarly men to help him. So you can counter the nay sayers that would try and accuse you of using a Study Bible that was produced by "one man".

One final note. The in text maps, study aids, illustrations, chapter numbers, book headers are printed in a blue tint. Maps and illustrations are the same found in the ESV Study Bible but are not in multi-color. The main text and notes are in black letter. The text is in double columns with center references. The font is appealing to the eye and it seems to be nicely formatted. There is no red letters of Christ.

I hope this review was helpful enough and you enjoy hours of in depth Bible Study.

This is a great Study Bible. The text is the updated 2007 ESV trans. which is a superb translation that incorporates both readability and a very high degree of translation accuracy. The English is just beautiful. This particular version has both a topical concordance found in the original MacArthur NKJV, as well as the word concordance found in the MacArthur NASB, as well as an outstanding ESV concordance used in the reference edition. The notes are typical MacArthur exposition, although weak in the OT in some places. That is not meant as a critical comment, there simply is not enough room in one volume.

If you're going to purchase a copy you should really consider buying either the genuine leather or the calfskin. The calfskin is more costly by far but you truly get what you pay for and it makes a great gift Bible. The benefit is that the oils in your hands will naturally rub into the leather with regular use and help condition the leather. Calfskin leather truly is once in a lifetime in that there is no need for leather maintenance. Additionally, the flexibility of the leather doesn't tug at the binding the way genuine leather sometimes does.

If you can't afford the calfskin then I recommend the genuine. You won't pay that much more for it than the imitation and the quality is far superior to the trutone imitation leather in the other editions listed. The hardcover Bible is nice for its durability but the corners will break down fast if its not in a cover, and many people don't use them because they're heavier and are less flexible, thus more awkward.

I love Bibles and have the calfskin, genuine, and imitation MacArthur Study Bibles. I use to work in Bible retail and I can say that these are quality Bibles. The way you can tell is threefold: first is the page cutting quality. Close the Bible and look at the edges on the corners to see if they're cut evenly. Then feel across the middle sections for any ridges. That's important because those ridges will fade very quickly from page turning and normal usage. The second test is the binding. Lay the Bible open and flat and try to look down the spine. You want to see the spine bend but not crease, or pinch. You should be able to see all the way through under the spine without the binding coming loose from the pages. Close and tight binding lasts a lot longer and is a sign of a quality bind. Now look at the inside corners of the outside flaps and see if the leather is folded (which this edition is) or pressed into place or cut and glued. The folded corners last longer and is another sign of quality binding. All calfskin Bibles are always folded.

The leather on these Bibles is a deep black rather than a shinny or glossy black. The glossy/shinny appearance is created by chemicals that resist the oils secreted by our hands. Those oils help preserve the leather so its better to buy a Bible that does not have that shinny gleam on the leather.

Overall the only two things I wish this Bible had were two ribbon markers instead of one, and for the topical concordance to be as in depth as it was for the NJKV edition. Other than those very small items, this is a Bible that is here to stay and will bless all who possess it.

I have gone through several MacArthur Bible Studies, and decided it was time to get the MacArthur Study Bible because I loved how informative the bible studies were. This bible is absolutely beautiful. The black calfskin cover is soft, flexible, and very high quality. If you are looking for a study Bible that will help you fully understand the word of God, and grow deeper in your faith, then this is the perfect bible for you. I have several study Bibles, and it seems like a lot of them have personnel opinion scattered throughout the notes, but Macarthur's notes are straight forward and easy to understand with plenty of references to back up his notes. The price is a little steep for the premium leather edition, but it's worth it for the content you get.

MacArthur's position on the 'Doctrines of Grace' is well known so I don't know how the previous gentleman (who wrote 3 reviews??) could have been "surprised" that Mac's position, (the biblical one) is that you can't lose your salvation. As Kistler says, "You're not saved because you want to be saved; you're saved because God WANTS you saved." Why God would save any of us is the real question, and only God knows why. Why would an arminian buy a bible for a Calvinist? This has been debated for centuries and we won't settle it here....(but I'll bet he'll try), so let's just agree to disagree.

This is a great Study Bible! My favorite translation combined with Dr. MacArthur's 40+ years of study in the notes. Crossway consistently puts together a quality Bible and this one is no exception and the price can't be beat!

In response to Robert's review: he must think true believers can lose their salvation and their post-conversion sins are not forgiven to make those claims about the notes.
