The book is easy to follow. I love being able to improve my own understanding of grammar at the same time. This review is to primarily point out that I bought this book without the student workbook or test book because blank student pages are in the book and the publisher says you can use it for one student. It's a great idea, but just not practical or convenient. The book isn't really set up to allow for the usage of the student pages. There isn't a separate section for answers and a separate section for student pages. The answers are printed on the left side of the page while the student pages are on the right. I could just paperclip a cover page on the left side for each lesson and hand my daughter the book but it's cumbersome. The book is over 700 pages! I don't feel I can tear the pages out because on the back of each student page is the answer page to tomorrow's lesson. The student book is 317 pages and the test book 48. I'm not going to photocopy that many, so I finally ended up buying the student books anyway. Next time I'll just buy them all at the same time and save the extra shipping cost. It's a great idea since homeschoolers are always looking for ways to save money, but the publisher didn't set the book up to actually be able to do so, in my opinion.

This is our 2nd year with Easy Grammar. We will be in the Grade 5 book this year. I taught English in France at college level and love grammar - but realize it can be overdone. IMO, at this age, it should be quick, fun and tweaked in short, daily increments. We spend more time fixing sentence structure in our IEW writing program (this year: Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales). Our grammar history: K - Launch into Language - he LOVED; 1st - Shurley English 2; 2nd - Shurley English 2 repeat for the 1st part of the year, then we just stopped grammar altogether - my ADHD boy could diagram sentences before being diagnosed and treated for ADHD and all this grammar push seemed crazy - especially as I adopted a more Charlotte Mason philosophy and style. 3rd - Daily Grams - I just got one student workbook and nothing else - he did every one of the 180 pages with basically no teaching - I didn't understand how to use these products, I just heard from other moms, "Shurley one year, Daily Grams the next year" - I didn't even know or understand about Easy Grams; 4th - Easy Grams 4, Teacher's book only - student pages are included; but, as others have pointed out, the answers to each page are on the opposite left-hand page AS THEY WORK THE PAGE - so, THAT's a problem. To get around this, I disassembled the entire book (which has VERY strong glue in the binding), 3-hole punched each page and put it in a 3-ring binder - you can have this process done fairly cheaply at an office supply store or FedEx/Kinkos, I later learned. I would only pull out the pages we were going to do that day and put each in front of my son one at a time so he didn't see the answers. But, of course, I only have one, so I'm able to monitor how he goes about his work. If you are wanting your child to work on his/her own, It might be better to have the student workbook available for them as well. Or, you could get 8 1/2 x 11 post-it note-type pages to cover the answer pages each day (we have some that have manuscript lines on them which would help hide the print). I liked Easy Grammar so much, we just stopped using Daily Grams. Mostly because the review in Daily Grams did not coincide with the previous day's lesson in Easy Grams so it didn't make sense to me to use both. It seemed redundant in an illogical way. Plan for 5th grade - Easy Grams 5 - Teacher's Book only - taking it to Kinkos for disassembling and 3-hole punching so my he can work the worksheet pages each day without the answers visible.

My first daughter flew through grammar lessons, quickly identifying subjects, verbs, and so on. My first son stunned me when I realized he couldn't just recognize them. I switched language books, thinking a different approach might help, but it didn't. A homeschooling mom who had been a school teacher recommended Easy Grammar (which I had been avoiding because I wanted "rigorous," not "easy" grammar). She said that this has the student memorize a list of prepositions, then learn to cross out the prepositional phrases before identifying the subject and verb. I knew that would work because my son often picked an object of a preposition as the subject. Sure enough, within a few lessons my son was identifying subjects and verbs like a pro. When son number two showed signs of the same difficulty in 4th grade, it was a no-brainer to purchase this for him in 5th grade. I use the teacher book, keeping a thick paper over the left hand page to cover the answers.

This is my second time using the Easy Grammar 5th grade. My older son did it practically on his own. This son needs a little more guidance, so I see more and I'm learning too. Grammar was my most feared subject in high school, so I managed to avoid taking it. Thanks now to Easy Grammar, I'm learning it isn't that scary. Both of the boys have done and are doing well with it. I agree with others that you really need the student book unless you want to copy every single lesson.

All three of my children have successfully used the Easy Grammar series from grades 3 through 7, and really like the ease of use while working independently. This is a simple program that takes just 15-30 minutes a day to learn and reinforce concepts. A great companion to the Wordsmith writing program. We alternate years with Daily Grams as to not have grammar overkill.
