Imagine living in a place where telling others about Jesus could get you arrested, even sent to prison. That was the reality for Bob Fu and his wife Heidi when they were imprisoned in 1996 for running an illegal house-church in Beijing. By day, Fu was an English teacher in a Communist school, by night he preached in an underground church network.
In God's Double Agent, Fu tells his remarkable story, from growing up in heart-breaking poverty, to discovering the life-changing power of the Gospel as a student, to his efforts to help persecuted Christians in China. Reading Fu's story will inspire you to boldly proclaim and live out your faith in a world that is at times indifferent, and at other times hostile, to those who spread the gospel.

Bob Fu is indeed God's double agent. By day Fu worked as a full-time lecturer in a communist school; by night he pastored a house church and led an underground Bible school. This can't-put-it-down book chronicles Fu's conversion to Christianity, his arrest and imprisonment for starting an illegal house church, his harrowing escape, and his subsequent rise to prominence in the United States as an advocate for his brethren. God's Double Agent will inspire readers even as it challenges them to boldly proclaim and live out their faith in a world that is at times indifferent, and at other times murderously hostile, to those who spread the gospel.
He currently lives with his wife and their three children in Midland, Texas.
"The riveting account of a student leader of the Tiananmen Square protests who becomes a literal prisoner for Christ and then escapes to the West. Impossible to put down." - Eric Metaxas, New York Times Bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martry, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery
"Like John the Baptist, Bob Fu has influenced people from all walks of life across the nation of China and beyond, and led many to repent and believe in Jesus. Anyone who cares about the persecution of God's household in China and in the Middle East should read this book." - Brother Yun, Chinese house church leader and author of The Heavenly Man
"This compelling and deeply moving account of Bob Fu's escape from China and his heroic work on behalf of other human rights workers there is likely to become a classic. From the very first page, you are hooked. There are few more convincing narratives of Christian courage under persecution and suffering." - David Aikman, Former Senior Correspondent for Time Magazine, author of One Nation Without God?
"Courageous, tireless, well-informed and effective. Bob Fu and China Aid are harbingers of the more just and open China that we pray is coming." - Dr. Os Guinness, author The Global Public Square
"Bob Fu's story is a gripping and inspiring account of courage and endurance. His personal experience of China's struggle for democracy, religious freedom, free speech, and human rights-particularly coercive population control-makes this an indispensable book, especially for anyone who admires China and its people and who yearns for reform and change. I feel privileged to have had a small walk-on part in what is a story of suffering but tempered by hope." - David Alton (Rt. Hon.Professor Lord Alton, House of Lords, Parliament, UK)
"I will always remember that night in early 1997 meeting Bob and Heidi and baby Daniel at Dulles airport, although I have met many people there over the years. It was easy to identify Bob as we met for the first time. That irrepressible spirit has become familiar to many, many others over the years since they first arrived in America. Bob and Heidi's experience in Beijing with persecution for their faith, and the uncertainty of life as exiles in Hong Kong, have given them a powerful sense of commitment to helping others who suffer for their faith and more generally, for the freedoms of expression and association. They have persevered through many twists and turns of the road, despite the costs. And throughout, they have sought ways to bring God's blessings to the Chinese people." - Dr. Carol Lee Hamrin, senior associate, Global China Center; research professor, George Mason University
"God's Double Agent is a moving testament to the liberating power of Christian faith over the empty ideological doctrine of Communism. Every freedom-loving person should read this book. Bob has done Christianity and the free world a great service by sharing his story of spiritual and political liberation. May many millions follow in his path." - Dr. Richard Land, president emeritus, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention; president, Southern Evangelical Seminary
"God's Double Agent is an engaging memoir of Pastor Bob Fu, founder and president of China Aid, which serves the persecuted church in China. Pastor Fu's story takes us from the hardship endured by his parents under harsh Communist policies, through his own birth into desperate circumstances and the bitterness he felt growing up. He tells how he was delivered from this bitterness through his conversion to Christianity, immediately began evangelizing others (dubbed "The Missionary" during graduate school), and his eventual escape to the United States. Written in an intimate and lively style, this account gives insight into the formation of a tireless advocate for the persecuted church in China, as well as a portrait of his bold, brilliant, and intrepid wife, Heidi." - Reggie Littlejohn, president, Women's Rights Without Frontiers
"This book is truly one of David and Goliath proportions. Bob Fu may physically be a little man, but in reality he is a giant: full of faith, courage, and tenacity. This is the amazing story of Bob's life spent fighting for freedom and justice both inside and outside of his beloved homeland of China." - Mervyn Thomas, chief executive, Christian Solidarity Worldwide

We visited 2 Churches on Sundays and also met with several Pastors, plus visited a seminary. In each case they indicated a lot of freedom in preaching the Gospel and for teaching children and training leaders. These were Registered Churches and obviously this is 15 plus years later and there have been changes. Bob was a revolutionary before he became a Christian and continued his fight for more freedoms after. He is to be commended for his willingness to suffer for the cause of Christ. In any case, I found the book to be interesting, but have no way of knowing if his work has influenced some of these changes. We know there is persecution in many places and it is a challenge for us to be in prayer for such.

At times they can be slanted by making heroes of mortals. By the time I finished Bob Fu's story I was left not so much admiring him but the Lord whom he serves. I believe he would tell you that was his intent. Raised in a poor Chinese family that struggled to survive in the aftermath of that nation's Cultural Revolution, "God's Double Agent" tells of this young man's search for personal recognition and success. He appeared to be on track until the student rebellion at Tiananmen Square made him an enemy of the state. He lost nearly everything, including the loyalty of trusted friends. At his lowest point and in a most unexpected way, he met the Lord and his life was changed forever. From that moment on, he had a newfound purpose in life...a purpose that led him to found a ministry that seeks to bring freedom to his fellow-countrymen who are suffering from religious persecution. Today he is known as "the pastor of the Chinese church's underground railroad." In his endorsement of this book, Eric Metaxas has said that it is "impossible to put down." I felt the same way. One chapter flows naturally into the next and the reader feels as if he is reading an adventure novel rather than a true-to-life story. The portrayal of China presented within the book strips away romantic notions and digs beneath the political guise that is but a smokescreen masking the corruption and oppression that exists within the world's largest nation. Although separated by half-a-world, the reader finds himself relating to Bob Fu's circumstances and being challenged to ask himself, "How would I handle myself were I to face a similar situation?" I am generally not a fan of modern Christian biographies, but I am grateful that I came across this one (through Voice of the Martyrs). The author, with the help of ghost-writer Nancy French, writes with bold conviction. Rather than seeking to "grind an ax" against the Chinese government, his words convey great compassion. He closes with an appeal for the Western church to embrace the plight of those who suffer daily for their faith. After all, "To whom much is given, much is required!"

Christianfictionaddiction5 Stars Out Of 5An incredible true story!November 17, 2013ChristianfictionaddictionQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If you have ever questioned whether God is real and at work in the world around you, then do yourself a favour and pick up a copy of "God's Double Agent". Bob Fu's account of his childhood and his path to becoming a follower of Jesus in the midst of communist China is absolutely riveting, and will leave you pondering your own dedication to God. It would be impossible to walk away from this book and not weigh the cost of following Christ, when you learn of the plight of millions of Chinese Christians who spend time in jail and who are brutally persecuted for their faith, and who still praise the name of Jesus! The book is very well-written, and reads more like a fiction book than an autobiography in that the chapters are full of action and drama, romance and suspense. But the best part of this book is that it is a true account, such that instead of just wishing that the characters are real, like in fiction novels, readers can know that these men and women are real. Through the pages of this story, readers will grow to genuinely care about Bob Fu and his wife Heidi, and see that they are not pretending to be perfect, but struggle with the same things you and I do. Bob and Heidi demonstrate the power of relying on God to set the course of your future, and submitting to His will for your life. Yet they also remind us that we are in s spiritual war, and we must also play a role in fighting for the freedom of men and women and children to be free from persecution. "God's Double Agent" will not only stir your faith, but call you to take action as well. It is a book that everyone should read!
I highly recommend this book and award it 5 out of 5 stars.
