Raised by a father who was a former Special Forces officer, Taylor is beautiful and brilliant and knows how to take care of herself. But she is haunted by her past and the sacrifice her father made to save her from a brutal rape when she was seventeen. After a controversial stint in the Secret Service, she has become the most prominent private security specialist in America. When she discovers the body of a former client's top assistant, all the evidence points to embezzlement and suicide. But Taylor has no way of knowing that her mother, who ran out when Taylor was nine, is about to reappear and lead her down a twisting path of danger and deceit. It's a road that won't end until they reach the spot where Taylor's father died-where Taylor learns some sacrifices can never be earned.

Publisher's Description

Double Cross continues the story of Taylor Pasbury, a heroic young woman introduced in James David Jordan’s novel, Forsaken (“highly readable . . . Taylor is a character worth another visit” —BookPage).

James David Jordan’s Double Cross is a life-risking, gun-shooting, out-smarting mystery that cleverly ties in the story of grace and salvation with the life of former Secret Service agent Taylor Pasbury. Taylor, who now owns her own private security business, finds herself in the middle of a possible embezzlement case. One person is already dead, another soon will be, and answers are harder to come by than questions.

Jordan brings Taylor Pasbury to life with her sharp-shooting skills, quick reflexes, and her many acknowledged flaws, including a low self-esteem and a long line of bad choices in the guy department. She has lived a life of loss, first with her mom, then her dad, and last, with Simon Mason. All of these affiliations are important to who Taylor was and who she is becoming as she tries to figure out past and present relationships, especially since her mom is back in the picture.

Along with the help of Michael Harrison, Katie Parst, and Kacey Mason, daughter of the late Simon Mason, Taylor is trying to figure out what happened with the mystery surrounding Simon Mason Ministries and the supposed suicide of Elise Hovden. When Katie Parst thinks she may have a connection, Taylor ends up in the hospital with a broken finger and a bullet in her side. It isn’t until later that she realizes that the answer she is looking for may be closer to home than she has been thinking.

Through a search for acceptance, love, and truth, Taylor begins to understand the true meaning of a gift as she works to understand exactly what it was that her father did for her, and what Simon did for Kacey. This is where James David Jordan brings in the truth of the gospel, coming from the most unlikely source, being that Jesus died for us, that it was a gift, and there is nothing we can do in return other than accept it. As it says in Romans 6:23 (NIV), “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This gift is addressed again in Romans 5:6-8.

Jordan is skillful in developing his characters, giving them realistic actions, flaws, and concerns. This story has blackmail, embezzlement, kidnap, murder, and suicide – all parts of a good mystery. I recommend this book because of the intelligent, natural writing; the interesting plot, complete with a few twists; and the fact that it communicates the core truth of God’s gracious gift without forcing it down the reader’s throat. This would be a good book for people who are struggling with trying to earn God’s grace or who feel that, since they do not deserve Christ’s sacrifice, salvation isn’t for them. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, NIV). – Nicole E. Dynes, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Endorsements

Thus begins Double Cross, David James Jordan's fall 2009 release that continues the story of Taylor Pasbury begun in Forsaken. In this suspense-filled mystery, Taylor follows misleading clues of embezzlement and suicide down a dangerous trail of clues that lead to kidnapping, blackmail and murder.

The sassy dialogue is laugh-out-loud funny, the suspense is merciless, the complex, finely drawn characters sympathetic, even the ones you love to hate. But, this is more than a murder mystery or suspenseful story. It's also a thought-provoking journey about the meaning of selfless sacrifice, illustrated by the personal and spiritual struggles of the main character. The author's intense, suspenseful writing, filled with unforeseen plot twists and turns, leads to an unexpected, but satisfying ending that leaves the reader wanting more. This is one to put on your calendar when it's released in the fall. - http://www.examiner.com/x-15805-Seattle-Christian-Book-Review-Examiner~y2009m7d9-Book-Review-Double-Cross
