Publisher's Description

In describing the qualities of a church deacon, the Bible also emphasizes the traits of his companion: “Wives, too, must be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything” (1 Timothy 3:11). Yet for all the traditional deacon handbooks, less prevalent are those for a deacon’s wife.

This warmhearted, conversational new book from “Fresh Ideas” syndicated columnist Diana Davis shares stories and insights for deacon wives whether just inaugurated or long experienced. The reader will enjoy tips on how to best encourage her husband’s work, the ministry of the pastor and his wife, and other church staff and members. There are also helpful home and family suggestions, self-evaluation forms and checklists, and even a detailed teaching plan to share this wealth of material with other women in the church

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm an author, a minister's wife, a speaker, a columnist, and a mom. - I write a regular column in Deacon Magazine for deacon wives (and regular articles for several Christian publications.) - I've led national training conferences for deacon wives. - I've led many state-wide and association-wide and local church conferences for deacon wives--usually alongside my husband as he trains the deacons. - Most importantly, I've served alongside hundreds of deacon wives in our local church, and I have personally observed how a deacon's wife can influence the personality and ministry of a local church family.

My previous books, Fresh Ideas (B&H '07) and Fresh Ideas for Women's Ministry (B&H '08) are full of ideas that would help a deacon wife, but this book is targeted directly to her!

I'm a Texas native, living and serve God in Indianapolis. I'm married to a wonderful guy, and we have three adult children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  When the leadership from my denomination asked me to write a new, current, relevant book for wives of deacons, I pounced on it. This is a topic I can champion with great joy. As I've served alongside my pastor/husband,I've learned the value of deacon wives. We now work with several hundred churches in state denominational work, and the value of deacons and their wives is even more obvious from this view! I've concentrated on challenging deacon wives to fulfill 1 Timothy 3:11, and provided lots of simple ideas about how they can accomplish it.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I'm praying that every deacon's wife will be encouraged and enriched by this reading. I'm hoping she'll learn the importance and value of her ministry alongside her husband, and that she will be ignited to a greater commitment to serve God. And I'm praying that churches across our world will be enriched because of those deacon wives.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  As I prepared for this book, I did an informal post-card survey of several dozen pastors about deacon wives. I was blown away at their responses! Pastors treasure the ministry of both deacons and their wives, and value their wisdom and support. There was one statement, made by every single pastor surveyed, that will greatly impact deacon wives. Read the book.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I love to read Randy Singer's fiction, Ed Stetzer's statistical brilliance, and Thom Rainer's newest how-to books.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Small church. Large church. And any size in between -- deacons and deacon wives are a strategic, important part of ministry. I have served as a pastor's wife in a church with two deacons and a church with one hundred deacons, and I can assure you that true ministry in a church family necessitates your involvement. You're important, deacon wives!
