Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5An incredible crime story!January 1, 2015Debbie WilderSalinas, CAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Avery North is a wonderful character. She has a huge conflict going on inside trying to balance her job as a police detective and her family commitments. This whole conflict is very well presented as she works her way through leading the team trying to solve the murders of 2 Jane Does. Along with this inner conflict she is dealing with personal heartache from losses in the past that keep coming to her mind as the case progresses. She is a very realistic character that has been developed with incredible thought to detail.
She is surrounded by a number of other well written characters both in her family and on her team. I really enjoyed getting to know each of them. I hope that I learn more about them in future books in this series.
The plot leaves nothing to be desired. It is very intricately woven and proceeds to build throughout the novel. It is very nicely interspersed with sections that work to develop the characters and their relationships. This novel has a very nice balance between the two. I was kept guessing throughout the story as to exactly how the murders were committed and how they tied in with other criminal activity that was going on.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A good police mysteryJuly 5, 2014bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I like a good police mystery and this is a good one. The heroine is Avery North, Atlanta detective. She is on the case of the death of two young Asian women, each with a specific tattoo. Also involved is medical examiner Jackson Bryant. With support from Jackson, Avery pursues clues that take her to the terrifying world of human trafficking.
I really like Avery as a character. She is tough and a strong protagonist. She is also a widow and mom of a tween, trying to juggle all of her responsibilities. Coming into the picture is Jackson. It looks like romance may be on the horizon.
I liked the police work. The case Avery is working on is complex. She also has to deal with her own emotional issues as she pursues the murderer. Her brother had been murdered in a police operation that went bad and she is determined to find out who was responsible for it. That distracts her at times.
I really enjoyed the novel. At the end, we are left hanging with a clue from her brother's death. I will certainly read the sequel.

Widowed, with a teenage daughter, Detective North deals with her grief, teen angst, and a new relationship. These relationships make the story more complex and interesting, then the murder mystery becomes more than a simple murder mystery. The suspense level is low, but the mystery complexity is high enough to make up for it. The focus of the book is on a crime that is growing across the world, human trafficking. This book has a strong Christian aspect.
I recommend this book to lovers of good clean police mysteries, with a nice romance along side.
IolaNew ZealandAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Exciting Romantic SuspenseOctober 17, 2013IolaNew ZealandAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5Atlanta Detective Avery North has just been called in from her day off to investigate a murder. The victim was a young Asian female with a magnolia tattoo, similar to a recent unsolved crime, and Avery is motivated to solve this murder before another girl suffers the same fate.
She is assisted by her partner, Mitch, and by Jackson Bryant, the associate medical examiner for the force. Avery and Jackson have recently started dating— he's the first man she's had more than one date with since her husband died three years ago, leaving her with a daughter. Avery also has family issues. Her father has recently retired from the police force, her brother was murdered on the job four months earlier, and his killer is still at large. She struggles to balance the competing demands of God, family, a full-time job and now dating, and this felt very real.
This is the first book in the new Southern Crimes series, and I'll certainly be keen to read more in the series. It's got everything I look for in Christian romantic suspense: intelligent and likeable yet imperfect characters, a strong plot with plenty of suspense and a developing romantic subplot, good writing, and an underlying Christian theme. It's dealing with some big issues—modern slavery—but manages to do it without getting too graphic. Recommended.

GingerS2194 Stars Out Of 5Great romantic suspenseOctober 2, 2013GingerS219Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Do you like suspense novels? Clean romance? Then this is the book for you. This is my first time reading anything by Lisa Harris and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to read, and enjoy. From the very beginning of the book, I was hooked, and until the suspect was revealed, I was clueless.
Kudos to Ms. Harris. I look forward to more titles from her in the future.

Tell us a little about yourself. Im a mom to three wonderful kids, which as you probably know means my job description consists of everything from chef, to chauffer, to counselor. I also work with my husband in ministry where we live in Mozambique, run a non profit to assist the physical needs of those we work with, called The ECHO Project, and of course, I love to write.
What was your motivation behind this project? Several years ago, I wrote Blood Ransom, a novel that focused on human trafficking in Africa. At the time, I had no idea this was an issue in the US. With this new series, I decided that setting this story in the US, the backdrop of human trafficking would not only make an exciting story, but would also help people become aware of this very real issue.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? In the story, my main character, Avery North, struggles to balance life as a widow and a single mom with a full-time career. She has to come to the point where she realizes her weaknesses and fears and rely only on Gods strength. In our own lives, we often feel inadequate to follow Gods call, but never forget that the God who created the universe loves us and wants to be our strength. He came to heal the empty and broken hearted, and those searching for freedom and hope. Thats what I hope readers take away from this story.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I have to confess that Avery and I share some of the same fears. It's easy to run from one appointment to the next, while crossing the urgent tasks off our to-do list, but if we don't stop to find out who God really is, to really stat to know him and build that relationship, what have we gained? My prayer is that we can find the courage to step out of our comfortable world and see the hurting, the lonely and helpless around us and find ways to be Jesus to them. The amazing thing is that in turn, our own lives will be made richer because of it!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Currently, I'm reading the Heavenly Man, which is a remarkable story about Chinese Christian brother Yun. I've been so inspired by his story. It's a reminder to me that everything I do be for His glory!
