Brinna Caruso is a cop with a mission. Twenty years earlier, she was a victim of an abduction. Fortunately, hours later a police officer with a search and rescue dog found her and returned her home. That experience influenced her decision to become involved in search and rescue for abducted and missing children herself. When she joined the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD), she eventually acquired a scent-trained search dog through a federal grant. Hero became her partner. Milo, the policeman who rescued her, kept in touch and mentored her, helping her become the successful cop she is now.

What Brinna doesn't know is that her abductor is not only alive but in the area. He saw a newspaper article about Brinna in which the journalist made an issue of her 20 year's anniversary since her abduction and rescue. She also made an issue of Brinna's mission as K-9 officer to participate in as many searches and track down as many abductors as possible. He decided to do some celebrating himself, by taunting her--new little girls to snatch before he disappeared again.

Jack O'Reilly has been on the force for fifteen years. He was a homicide detective, one of the best at LBPD. But a year before, a drunk driver crushed Jack's spirit with a head on crash that killed his wife and unborn daughter. Since then, he has only lived to see the man pay for his crime. Nothing else gave him any purpose.

When one night on patrol with Hero, Brinna defensively shot a young perp after a high speed car chase, the press turned on her, vilifying her actions. She was temporarily re-assigned to patrol status with Jack O'Reilly. She didn't want to be there with him, and he didn't want to be there with her. But as Jack got to know Caruso he became impressed with her drive to be every missing child's savior. Apparently, he'd been growing cynical. Could he ever be the same cop he'd been six years ago?

Janice Cantore writes an action-packed adventure/mystery based on her own 22 years of service as a police officer in Long Beach, CA. The action is tight and feels authentic. The bad guy in the story is truly creepy but smart enough to keep the FBI and the local law enforcement hopping to keep up with him and protect the little girls he harms. The author's talent brings to her readers thrilling action and suspense as well as relevant faith-oriented character development.

I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next book, Visible Threat, as well as other books written by this author.

This was my first exposure to Janice Cantore and I was really impressed. The author's previous occupation as police officer really lends authenticity to the story in terms of police procedure, lingo, call situations, and even how officers act towards one another. Brinna was abducted and molested as a 6 year old but now 20 years later, she is a police officer on a mission to find missing children. She is tough, honest, and focused. She is forced to partner with Jack, a homicide detective back on patrol while struggling with the death of his wife and unborn child. I liked that the author included God in the book by raising a difficult question that many people struggle with: If God is good, how can He let evil happen, let children be abducted and hurt by people? Brinna does not believe in God because of this. Jack used to believe in God but lost his faith once a drunk driver took away his wife. Both of them struggle with the question of God but with differing outcomes. I liked that the chapters were really short; it seemed to make the story move along quicker. *Possible spoilers* Although, the villain is known from the beginning, I would have liked more of a confrontation between him and the police. His manner of death was "poetic justice" but I guess it was a little anti-climactic to me. I was also confused about Brinna's mentor, Milo. Even though Milo found peace in God, I couldn't understand why he would commit suicide anyway *End of spoiler* Overall, I really enjoyed this story (4.5 stars). There wasn't a romance in this one but maybe there will be in the next book in this series, Visible Threat.

After reading the description of this book, I would not normally pick it up to read it. I'm not much of a mystery, suspense reader. I like a little, but not too much. Because I am doing a summer reading program, I decided to read it anyway. It was great and I am looking forward to getting my hands on the sequel. Brinna was abducted at 6 years of age, was found and went on to become a cop with a huge passion for rescuing children. She was a little too work-focused and had no time for God or family, but that changes through out the book. By the end, she realizes that God and heaven are things she needs to deal with and she is willing to go back to church and start to deal with these issues in her own life. There is only the faintest hint of any kind of romance which was somewhat refreshing. I would definitely recommend this book, but a warning: It is very hard to put down.

I like a story with well-drawn characters and clearly defined good guys and bad guys. I also appreciated the lack of foul language in this book and others like it ('he cursed' works for me). I felt that the main characters were likeable and relatable. The soul-searching was prevalent. There were plot twists, action, and tension, so the story drew me in and kept me turning pages. The characters were still in process of resolving their issues at the end, but both Brinna and Jack were well on their way. Their progress was a good lead-in for the next book in the series. It was edited superbly, and I liked the ending.

This book was great! I had never read any of Cantore's work until this book, but I will definitely be reading more. This book was suspenseful and kept me fully interested and entertained until the end. Written by a former police officer, the book offers a very realistic look into their lives and work. This book is very well written and has such a complex storyline that I often had trouble putting it down. I loved the characters and feel like they are very relatable. I also loved that God is woven throughout the book and faith is very real and integral part of the story.
