    Great Medical Drama

Dr. Shannon Frasier is no stranger to trauma, but a string of recent events cause her to wonder if she is capable of handling everything life is throwing at her. As she faces one crisis after another, she quickly learns that she must learn to trust the people in her life, but more importantly reconcile her relationship with the Lord.

Critical Condition is another stellar medical suspense novel from Richard Mabry! The story is intense and fast-paced. I enjoyed getting to know Shannon and Mark and seeing their relationship progress. Shannon's sister Megan was another great character. She probably showed the most growth of anyone in the story, and it would be fun to see her reappear in future novels. Dr. Mabry's experience as a doctor shines through this book and makes the medical situations very realistic.

I will admit that things "piled on" Shannon, and by the end of the novel, I was desperate for her to catch a break. However, Dr. Mabry was able to draw everything to a satisfying conclusion and didn't leave any loose ends for me to wonder over. I was happy to read another of Mabry's suspense novels and recommend to anyone who enjoys a fast-paced medical drama. [4 stars]

The death of her boyfriend as the result of a gunshot wound when she was a first year medical student deeply affected Dr. Shannon Frasier. A well respected and prestigious surgeon and professor, Shannon's competency as a physician is indisputable. Her fear of commitment, however, is obvious by her perpetual status as "almost-fiance" to Dr. Mark Gilbert. Mark's patience and strong faith are the strongholds that he clings to regarding his stationary relationship with Shannon.

While enjoying a celebratory dinner with Mark and two additional physician friends Shannon's deepest fears are revisited through a similar incident on her front lawn. This second gunshot death shattered her world once again, deepening the intensity of her defenses. Shannon's loss of faith and her frustration at not having the capacity to save either victim haunts her. Her younger sister then enters the story, complicating Shannon's life further. Police involvement has become an integral aspect in this suspense-filled novel as well. As the saying goes, "the plot thickens."

This is my first experience reading one of Richard Mabry's medical mysteries, and I found it very difficult to put this book down. As a former member of the medical community I thoroughly enjoy a well-written medical mystery, and Critical Condition was no disappointment. The author's medical knowledge is a definite bonus in this fast-paced novel filled with suspense and unforeseen developments. Considerable research is reflected through the detailed legalistic aspects that dominated much of this novel. The cast of characters revealed throughout this book represent believable and well defined individuals. Issues, such as addiction, fear of commitment and family dynamics are broached with candor and integrity. I recommend Dr. Mabry's book, "Critical Condition," and look forward to reading more books written by this talented author.

Dr. Shannon Fraiser and her guests, Dr. Mark Gilbert, Shannon's "almost fiancé," and Ann Kai, were in the middle of their celebration party honoring the newest graduate from Southwestern Medical School residency program, Dr. Le Duan (Lee) Kai. When she heard what sounded like three firecrackers being set off, Shannon decided to check and see what was happening and discovered what looked like a pile of old clothes. Only it wasn't old clothes, but an injured man. She quickly realized that the man had been shot and was bleeding profusely and that she was helpless to save him. The man was mumbling something unintelligible before he died. Instantly the scene was déjà vu to Shannon and she felt defeat once more as the decade old memory of her former fiancé Todd Gunderson crumpled at her feet from a gunshot wound and died before her eyes. Todd's death turned her future upside-down, by ending their plans of a life together.

It seemed that Dr. Frasier's troubles kept multiplying. Her sister, Megan, who had been recently released from rehab, moved in with her, ... but only until she could find a job, and an apartment. Megan also was keeping secrets and fleeing from an abusive relationship. Then Megan was arrested as a suspect in the victim's murder, as well as, a suspect to her former boyfriend's murder. In addition to all of this were the mysterious and threatening phone calls that Shannon received demanding to know what the dying man had said to her.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough as I read this mystery/thriller by Dr. Mabry. I just had to find out who had committed the crimes and why? Were Shannon and Megan involved, or just convenient scapegoats? I won't reveal the answers so that you will enjoy finding out for yourself when you read Critical Condition.

I think I've read every one of Dr. Mabry's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. This one was equally as enjoyable. The characters are interesting and I found relating with many of their struggles. I particularly enjoyed the dynamics between Shannon and her little sister. At times I wasn't sure how I felt about Mark, but over time I found myself liking him.

Although, the story was entertaining and fast-paced from the opening pages until the end, there is a familiarity to this story to other stories by this author. I don't want to give anything away, but if you've read other books by Dr. Mabry you will see the pattern.

This is a stand alone novel and would make a great introduction to an excellent author. If you've read and enjoyed Dr. Mabry in the past this one will not disappoint you.

Shannon Frasier witnesses the shooting of her college boyfriend, prays for him to live, but he dies. Thereafter, she blames God and has a very distant relationship with him. Ten years later, she is on staff, teaching residents how to be surgeons. She has a boyfriend, who wants to be engaged, but she keeps putting him off. Mark is a Christian and realizes Shannon's spiritual life is mediocre at best.

While hosting a small dinner party, a man is shot on Shannon's front lawn and dies in her arms, eerily reminiscent of her boyfriend's death ten years ago. That same night her sister calls and wants to come stay with her for a while. She has had problems in the past with alcohol and drugs, but has been out of rehab for six months and sober. Shortly thereafter, Shannon receives a mysterious phone call asking about the shooting on her front lawn. Then, she discovers her father has been diagnosed with cancer. How much more can one person take? Oh yeah, she also is exposed to the HIV virus and has to begin antiretroviral therapy. Then the detectives sent to investigate the case begin to treat Shannon and Megan as suspects, so Shannon now doesn't even trust law enforcement. Thankfully, Mark is there to support and encourage her through it all. He tells her, "Whatever happens we can handle together."

I liked the suspense and thrill aspect of the story. My favorite character was Megan. She was determined to live a new life after a former life of lots of mistakes. She has strength and a great support system in her sister and parents. I also enjoyed the medical setting and terminology. I didn't like how Shannon appeared weak and uncertain when making nonmedical decisions sometimes. It just didn't seem to jibe with her strong decision making skills as a surgeon. I did like that she finally recognized her need for help and sought that help instead of continually trying to fix her problem on her own. Mark shows spiritual maturity and a truly loving heart toward Shannon. I always enjoy this author's exciting novels and look forward to what comes inside the next suspense-filled package!
