A foundational book by one of the foremost scholars on Biblical manhood and womanhood. If you want to understand what the Bible says, rather than the pop ideas of our day, read this. In 45 chapters, Grudem covers a lot of ground succinctly, so you use it more as a reference of scholarship on specific Bible texts, or read it through, if you have more time. For anyone who wants to hear the Bible’s truth on this important topic.

The author's discussion of the roles of husband and wife in the family emphasize the husband's role as provider. His discussion completely ignores Proverbs 31. In Proverbs 31, the Bible describes all of the income-generating activities of a wife, and the husband in verse 23 "is known in the gates , when he sits among the elders of the land" (New King James Version). Even in modern times, many orthodox Jewish women are entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, etc, and their husbands are therefore freed up to spend their time in Torah study - which appears to be the modern equivalent of what Proverbs 31:23 is talking about. Her husband becomes known among the elders because he can spend his time studying the scripture and developing wisdom instead of devoting himself to mundane income-generating activities. The wife is the income-generating partner in the marriage -- not the husband. Most Christian discussions of male/female roles in marriage completely overlook this extremely important point! Thus, most books on this topic are never worth purchasing.
