Chilly PhillyGlen Burnie, MDAge: 25-34Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5A complete revelation on preachingNovember 9, 2010Chilly PhillyGlen Burnie, MDAge: 25-34Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I've been preaching for several years now, but I knew I wasn't doing a good job. I was never trained in preaching. It was sink or swim and I've been treading water for years.
I've heard great preachers as well as bad ones (I'm talking the cure for insomnia type preachers). I've always wondered how great preachers do it, but they are always hesitant to share real insight (they give you good for nothing kind of pointers). Thank God, Pastor Andy was willing to share how he does it.
I've also wondered how bad preachers don't have a clue how bad they really are. For them, it's the congregations fault for not "getting it", it's the congregations fault for "spacing out". After all, they are preaching the Word of God and that is enough. I agree with them, but when it's not enough, it's time to try something different.
I can't believe this book has been out so long and I never heard of it until now. I wish I had read it before I preached my first message. These are reasonable, practical keys to communication. I didn't like the expository bashing, because when I want to read and understand the bible I turn to expository (books and preaching). But I must admit that I didn't before I became a preacher. What is perhaps the most important aspect that I learned was how to connect with the audience and not to move into the "message" until I have connected. I think that's been my biggest flaw. I think that's the biggest flaw for "bad preachers". If you are thinking about buying this book, I would recommend it before buying countless other books on preaching (like I have). Give this book the first shot and if you disagree with it, move on to the next. -
Joshua Empringham5 Stars Out Of 5Communicating for a changeOctober 4, 2014Joshua EmpringhamQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Excellent perspective on preaching. Simple, and to the point. Preaching for and to real people, not for mechanical notetaking.
The Goal- Instead of preaching points "communicate for a change."
(I more than recommend this book. I have purchased it for two other people) -
Armando5 Stars Out Of 5The Best Book For PreachersJuly 24, 2012ArmandoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If you really want to do your part in capturing people's attention in preaching, I recommend this book. It's an easy, but powerful, read. This style of preaching is very different than what is traditionally taught by mentors and Christian colleges.
