Tell us a little about yourself. I have been a Christian for 35+ years and am active in my local church as a Bible teacher. I have degrees in theology and religion. I write and teach because, as John Owen described it, a Bible teacher has "an irrepresible motivation to instruct others in the things which the Divine will has revealed to them."
What was your motivation behind this project? My aim was to provide the Christian public with a thorough Bible study of the subject, so each Believer could decide for him or herself how to support their church ministers and ministries.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I want the reader engage with me, through this book, in an in-depth Bible study. Through the book each Believer should understand how God views giving, why giving has changed from OT times, and the Christian motivation for giving.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I was awestruck at how God could use similar principles to construct different systems to support the same ends. The principles applicable to giving in an agrarian society (OT Israel) guide NT giving (which is money, not food) without duplicating the OT system. I was humbled at the level of spiritual maturity God requires of the NT Believer by letting him or her decide how much to give to support Christ's ministers and ministries.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My influences are two former pastors who served as mentors, and my daily converse with the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures. Some of my favorite authors are C. C. Ryrie, A.W. Pink, John Owen, W.G.T. Shedd, Charles Hodge. Two main sources of inspiration are 1 Peter 4:11; 2 Timothy 2:2.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: "Why Christians Should Not Tithe" is neither apologetic nor polemic. The work was intended to be explanatory and instructive. To paraphrase Charles Bridges (comment on Proverbs 2:9) The Law treated Believers as children by prescribing the exact amount to be given. Christianity treats Believers as adults and leaves giving to circumstances, principle, and conscience. This book shows Believers how to be adults in their giving.
