Kelly is a mother. Well, she was at one time, before her ex-husband sold her daughter for drug money. And with his accidental death, she has no leads for finding her Emily. So she resorts to traveling the States on her weekends, DNA testing unsuspecting adoptees.

Jack is a single father, left to struggle through parenthood after his brother and sister-in-law die in a tragic accident. His adopted niece, Natalie, loves her "Dad", but struggles with her desire for a mom. She even goes so far as to try and set him up with her Amish nanny, Laura.

Eventually in Kelly's investigations, she comes across Jack and Natalie's special situation and decides to find out if this could possibly be her lost daughter. But will she tell the truth this time? Or continue using deceptive methods? And what of her relationship with Jack? And his relationship with Laura? And what if adoptive and birth parent issues aren't nearly as cut and dry as they seem?

This newest novel by David and Beverly Lewis takes so many twists and turns. There were several moments in the book where I thought I had it figured out, only to have the authors throw everything I knew upside down. I love the way their two writing voices played off each other as well. The character's voices were distinct, yet there was no disruption in the change of writing. The story flowed nicely.

While I've been a long time fan of Beverly Lewis, this is the first time I've read anything by David Lewis. And he certainly held his own in this work. While Beverly Lewis typically writes Amish fiction, this book is NOT Amish fiction. The only Amish character in the book is Laura, who does play a prominent part, but is not the entire focus of the book.

My only complaint was San's character. Jack's grouchy sister, San, has no problem sharing her discontent with absolutely everything Jack does. While she is a believable character, she is highly annoying and I could have done with less of her in the book.

All in all, I enjoyed it. This one gets four stars in my book. Kept me guessing till the last page. Hope you enjoy!

I admit as an adoption advocate the idea of a mother searching for her stolen daughter was heart wrenching and drew me in almost instantly.

Kelly Maines was a character that connected with this Mama's heart and I couldn't help but root for her as she fought between achieving her dreams, healing, or finding peace with both. She was a real character to me not an overly clean Christian version of a hurting woman but a hurting woman looking for peace.

Likewise, Jack made me laugh, the confusion he faced re-entering the dating scene while dealing with an aging Nattie was balanced beautifully with his tangible love for a little girl who changed his life.

The Lewis' are good at spinning a plot.

The slow revealing of each character's story, the events that made them into the people they had become were beautifully woven together with each narrative flowing into the next. I felt it was a great illustration of just how easily lives can be intertwined without us realizing the destination. This is a great novel for readers who like their books to be a journey rather than something to be consumed.

This talent at spinning out their plot helps give the Lewis' characters depth and humanity. I would go as far as saying that it would be difficult for the target audience to not find at least one character with whom their resonate.

That said, at times, I'll admit, I was a bit frustrated by the over-description which occurred, particularly in the book's earlier chapters. Initial character description felt a little forced with details being added for the sake of adding details.

The positive side of this, if it wasn't for writing up a review, I would have easily forgot the awkwardness of these initial introductions with complete outfit descriptions thanks to the overwhelming charm and heart which followed.

I would highly recommend this book to any readers looking for a good solid novel with a lot of heart and none of the smut that so often ruins a good simple romance.

A good book but you will need a dictionary because they use usual words, like dustup which means fight. They also used java for coffee, and BFF. The housekeeper who is Amish was shunned in Pennsylvania then she moved to Ohio and she drives a car and has a cell phone. She still is Amish.

The beautiful cover misled me to think the book was about the Amish. It is, in fact, about a modern family who happens to have a shunned Amish woman working for them. The story is about an English (non-Amish) woman, Kelly, who is searching for her daughter.

We meet two families as we go along. We get to know Kelly (the main character) and follow her difficult life. We also get to know Jack and his family. Jack is the one who has an Amish woman working for him.

The book is full of modern sayings, which I consider "slang" talk of the young. It is not a pleasant escape from our current world, as many Amish - based books tend to be.

However, it is very well written, and will hold your attention to the very end.

Ok, but too "sweet" for my taste

The premise of Child of Mine is about a woman looking for her daughter that was kidnapped as an infant and a man raising his deceased brother and sister-in-law's adopted daughter with the help of an Amish nanny.

My first thought about the book is that it is too sweet and the ending wraps up too nicely for me. I like happy endings, but with the emotional calibers we were dealing with, kidnapping and adoption, it just seems to end too happily. It reminded me of a soap opera, the characters seemed superficial. I also think there were some unimportant details added that were not needed. It almost seemed as if the authors wanted a certain number of pages and added extra details to achieve their goal. I probably wouldn't recommend this book to anyone that wasn't a fan of the authors. There are some books that draw me in and I want to tell my family about them, this one didn't. I think the only things I mentioned about the book were the annoying over details. There were two good redeeming points the authors made. I liked the forgiveness theme, especially between son and mother. "Forgiveness is for you, not her" The other statement was about adoptive mothers. "I grew in my mom's heart."
