Wit and wisdom and rollicking good fun. I adore Anne in all her complexity. Snubbing her nose at society as she makes her way in a man's world. I mean how can you not love a heroine with thoughts like: "The woman studied her like a tracker studied scat." (p.163) I laughed so hard my tummy still hurts. And while the story is brimming with humour and snappy dialogue guaranteed to make you smile, it has a serious, contemplative side as well. And a wonderful inspirational thread about trusting God in the hard places.

Nick tips the swoonworthy scale in a major way. Such a polished gentleman with a decisive life and business game plan but that desire to succeed can also be considered a major flaw. And the poor man just isn't prepared for a run-in with buffalo hunter Anne. Oh, the delight of those interactions! And the thing about Nick is that he doesn't look down on Anne. He's exasperated by her and frustrated and often confused but he treats her with respect. Even more than that, he looks beneath her faade in order to discover the real woman within. And when he discovers her...be still my heart. His dogged pursuit is utterly droolworthy. Big contented sigh. An exceptional mix of love, laughter and faith.

Caught in the Middle by Regina Jennings, 2014

The small towns and wide plains of 1880 Texas come to life when impossible situations and an abandoned child bring Nick Lovelace and Anne Tillerton together. Is Nick prepared to risk his future plans for an unexpected chance at love?Provided by publisher.

I love cowboy boots with prom dresses ~ but this lassie is not so inclined. She just loves her boots without the fancy trappings! Headed to town in pursuit of their prairie cook, Anne Tillerton finds a little more than she expected ~ a baby and a neighboring man from long ago. But... I get ahead of myself. Actually, they became reacquainted on the train.

A leisurely ride on a train ~ how could this change the direction of my life? So innocently unoccupied until Anne Tillerton came into view ~ or voice. Hmm . . . it had been a while since his sister's friend had shown up. They had talked about whether she had remarried and settled down. But... here she was, Anne, just as before. Camouflaged. Concealed from the lady she really was.

Nick Lovelace. How could it be that I would be discovered way out here in Indian Territory? Hopping a train to North Texas to find Tessa Drumright, the cook back at the station house ~ at least, she was until she took off after that no good Finn Cravens.

Intercepted along the way, I save Nick from his interference ~ no gun on him ~ bravery. Now I'll never get rid of him!

He was, to be sure, glad she was there. Now that they are in town, Nicholas Lovelace sees her as a hold-back ~ to his prestigious occupation; he needs to be fancy. Her down-home looks are a little dowdy since they are no longer on the home grounds of middle-of-the-tumbleweeds-Texas.

~ home ♪♫ home on the range ♫♪~

Anne is anxious to return to the prairie but her "grabbed" cook has taken off again, and... left her baby with Anne. What is the girl to do?! The only other person she knows in town is Nick. The well-to-do-er; so he thinks, anyway.

Life can change before you can hardly turn around. I found Tessa, all right, but now she's gone and I'll have to hunt up Finn. I have his little son to deliver to him. Life gets complicated without even trying. I sent a message back with the new cook I hired. I will be back as soon as I can get this figured out.

Author Regina Jennings kept me smiling and tearful in turns reading her latest novel in the Ladies of Caldwell County series, Caught in the Middle, in this Calamity-Jane-meets-Mr.-Fancy-Pants styled romance set in the 1880s Western frontier of Garber, Texas. Jennings uses sharp dialog and a cast of memorable characters to make this funny yet poignant, fast-paced story difficult to put down. I found myself cheering on heroine buffalo hunter Anne Tillerton as she struggles with a dark past in order to try and renew her faith in God and learn to trust others. And suit-and-tie railroad man Nicholas Lovelace is definitely hero material as he exhibits a sharp mind beneath those devilish good looks, has a wonderful sense of humor and shows a remarkable brand of perseverance in waiting for what he truly desires. This is my first Regina Jennings novel and I look forward to reading more!

If time spent reading is a good judge of a book then I'd I have to say that Caught In The Middle is a good one. I had a hard time putting it down and finished it in a day. Every time I put it down it seemed to keep tugging me back, just one more page, just one more chapter... You know the drill.

Since I hadn't read any of Regina Jennings' books before I didn't have any preconceived ideas on how the story would go. I have to say that I was quite surprised by the two main characters, they jump to conclusions, unintentionally hurt each other's feelings, make mistakes. Through all of that they manage to take care of a baby, work together, go into politics, make a few friends and a few enemies, forge a stronger faith, and they just might find love.

Caught In The Middle was a great story and will take you on some unexpected detours along the way.

If you enjoy historical fiction I would definitely recommend this book. It has a bit of everything; drama, ethical dilemmas, politics, humor, train robbers, heartbreak, romance, and best of all a happy ending.

I do have to say that the cover of Caught In The Middle is one of the cutest ones I have seen in my reading so far this year. The Bethany House team have outdone themselves once again.

Theres nothing I like better in a historical novel than a gutsy heroine. I know women throughout history were supposed to be demure and submissive, but I love it when one steps out of the mold. In Caught in the Middle, Regina Jenningss Anne Tillerton doesnt just step out, she turns around and blasts the mold to pieces. This female buffalo hunter reminded me a bit of the legendary Annie Oakley, and she had the wardrobe and mannerisms to match. In fact, she was so outlandish, I found myself wondering if the author had bitten off more than she could chew, and if it could even be possible to build a believable romance for Anne. Since Ive read Regina Jenningss books before, I shouldnt have worried. Annes deep wounds are what led to her current state, and it takes a patient, gentle man to start her on the path toward healing. Dont miss this rollicking romance.
