"Paws & Tales: God Cares for You" (a DVD) was sent to me by Tyndale House Publishers through their Blog Network. This is an animated video series that is based on the national radio program of the same name by Chuck Swindoll's Insight for Living.

This DVD contained two different stories with a video song sequence in between. The first story featured several woodland creatures (bears, a beaver, a fox, and a moose) that are trying to build a tree house. Along the way, they learn about making sure that your foundation is built on something solid and unmoving. This is further related to how we should be building our spiritual lives on a firm foundation (Christ) as well. I thought this story was good. The message was clear, and some of the lines were funny.

The second story featured the same characters and was based on God caring for us by being our Good Shepherd. The friends in this episode are given the opportunity to become shepherds for the day and to see what caring for others is all about. To me, this second story was not as good as the first one. It was like it had completely different writers. Part of it was slightly gross (unnecessarily, I thought — a sheep kind of 'spits up'), and at the end of the story, I don't think CJ (the bear) actually told the whole truth when he explained to the Shepherd what had happened overnight with the sheep. (Also, I was slightly offended that in this story the girls in the group are the ones who decide not to take care of the sheep because the sheep are too smelly, leaving the boys to take care of the smelly sheep instead...come on... this is 2011...let's make the girl characters have a little more gumption...)

Overall, I thought this DVD was okay. The messages were good and were based on spiritual truth. The animation felt a little flat to me, though. My 2-year-old daughter did not watch the whole thing, but I think that was only because this series is aimed at an older age group. One thing that is really cool about this DVD is that you can put it into your computer and print out coloring pages and activity sheets and other things. Neat!

Paws and Tales, biblical widom for kids, by Chuck Swindoll. In this video series we meet a group of friends who get into different adventures that tie in biblical truths. There are two episodes on this dvd. The first one being "a good neighbor" where all the kids decide to built their own forts/club houses after disagreeing on how it should be built. But they miss the foundational requirements to build a secure club house and end up in some trouble! This episode is tied in with making God your strong foundation and that anything you build on it will be strong! They also end it with a music video that is quite entertaining! The second episode on this dvd is "The good shepherd". C.J. and Ned decide to be shepherds for a day, but then wolves attack the sheep when C.J. falls asleep on the job and the sheep suffer. So C.J. and ned come up with a plan to take care of the sheep and the wolves! This story is tied into the Bible by comparing it to Jesus, the good shepherd. And how he takes care of us in every situation and is always alert!

From my four year old daughter on this video:

-what did you learn from this video? "Jesus is my shepherd

-did you like this video? "ya"

-Would you watch more video's like this? "yes"

-what is your favorite person on the video? "the sheep are my favorite"

-what was your favorite part? "when ned dressed up as a sheep, it was funny"

I found this dvd to be good. It's obviously geared towards younger children (6 and under), and my children found it a very entertaining series. I liked that it did include talking about God and Jesus and used scripture. While for the most part I don't think the kids will get that the story is a comparison of the biblical truth, but since they spell it out for you in the end it does get the point across! This is a video I feel find letting my children watch as it doesn't have any questionable scenes or language! Over all I would recommend this video to parents of young kids!! for more information on this series please check out http://www.pawsandtalesgames.com/ and http://www.tyndale.com/ .

This DVD video features two brand-new exciting "Paws & Tales" fun-filled animated episodes, for children of all ages. It even has some bonus features such as, music videos, activity sheets, and even lots of fun-filled teaching resources!

Episode one is called "The Good Shepherd". This episode teaches how Jesus is the Good shepherd, and that he always cares for His sheep! Episode 2 is called "A Good Foundation". It teaches children how having a "good foundation" in life, is very essential to being able to live a "Godly life".

My children and I found this video very fun and educational to watch! They learned some true Biblical values while watching it, while at the same time, finding it very fun to watch. If my children were younger, we would definitely be buying the rest of the series, as it is definitely a series that can grow with the family! I would definitely recommend this DVD to families with young children, as it is a great diversion to some of the main stream animation shows, that I would otherwise want my children watching. They will find it fun and enjoyable, while at the same time, be learning Godly character, that will help to give them a great foundation for life!

If you would like to win a copy of the DVD, I will be giving one away, complimentary of Tyndale House Publishers. Please leave me a comment, or send me a message. A winner will be randomly chosen after the tour ends 02/05/11.

God Cares for You: Bible Wisdom for Kids

    Chuck Swindoll

    Episode #1 A Good Shepherd

    Episode #2 A Good Foundation

Paws and Tales is a DVD series of Bears, Beaver, Sheep, Wolves, and a Fox to teach children biblical principles. Both episodes are short and keep the attentions of the youngest of children. My daughter who is a few weeks from being one year old personally enjoyed Oscar the Sheep, because he moved around the screen a lot and made a bunch of funny noises that she had never heard before. Oscar reminded me of the squirrel off of the movie Over the Hedge. My daughter also enjoyed dancing along with the music after each episode. Both songs at the end are very catchy and easy to remember like VBS songs and afterwards will be stuck in your head for a couple days.

Theological Points: I personally enjoyed how the series balanced moral commands while pointing the children to Christ. Most often with children's shows/movies they give moral commands, but divorce them from the indicative of Christ (e.g. a lot, but not all Veggie Tales). A lot of these children's movies make the moral command the thrust of the story and neglect the overall purpose the story whether that is to point the unbeliever to Christ, instructing the believer in kingdom living, or a redemptive historic purpose. The episode A Good Foundation begins with the animals arguing because they all want to build a tree-house, but they want to do it differently. The animals decide to part ways and build separate tree-houses. Both tree-houses epically fail for different reasons. One of the reasons for their failure was the trees in which they were trying to build their houses in were rotten resulting in their foundation collapsing. Finally, the children realize they need just each other's help, but also their fathers help. Their father then takes them to a Rock that overlooks the entire city and tells them to build their tree(??)-house here. The father then uses this as a means to discuss how Christ is the "good" foundation or the rock upon which we need to build our houses. All together I thought the stories were great and very entertaining, even for my young daughter. The only thing I was a little iffy on was the fact that he tells all the children that God loves them. Are all these children believers? Or is he teaching a more universal principal that God loves all people? If so, I think he would have a hard time justifying this one in scripture (e.g. John 3:36, Proverbs 6:17-9, 15:5, 12:2, 17:15, Lev 20:23, Ps 5:5, Hos 9:15, Mal 1:3, Psalm 11:5, Romans 9:13). At some point children need to be told that they are sinners and that God is at enmity with them and that unless they repent and turn to Christ then God's judgment/wrath will be upon them. These children are not young children or even infants for that matter; they can build a tree/rock house on their own! The story does not give clarity to whether they are all believers. One thing I will say is that this is not a main point of the story, but rather sub-point that was not explained. Overall the dvd was really good and was Christ centered. I would definitely recommend this to families looking for resources for entertainment for their children.

The DVD was good in that it told a "modern" interpretation of the Good Shepherd parable. However, the quality of the animation wasn't the greatest, however my Sunday School kids said it was good, but not great. Their interest waned after about 10 minutes.
