A voyageur and a young woman swept up in a time of upheaval and danger
discover firsthand the high price of freedom.

The British Army has taken control of Michilimackinac Island and its fort, forcing the Americans to swear an oath of loyalty to the crown in order to retain their land. Pierre Durant is a fur trader who returns after being away from the island for years, only to find the family farm a shambles and those he cares about starving and at the mercy of British invaders.

Torn between the adventurous life of fur trading and guilt over neglecting his defenseless mother, Pierre is drawn deeper into the fight against the British--and into a relationship with Angelique MacKenzie, a childhood friend who's grown into a beautiful woman. She now finds herself trapped by the circumstances of war and poverty, and the cruelty of her guardian, Ebenezer Whiley.

As tensions mount and the violence rages on, Pierre and Angelique must decide where their loyalties rest and how much they'll risk for love.

Angelique Mackenzie lives on remote Michilimacinac Island, Michigan Territory, in 1814. The island is occupied by the British, and all the loyal American men have left, including her fianc, Jean Durant, but not her cruel step-father. With Spring comes the return of Jeans handsome and adventurous older brother, Pierre who Angelique had feelings for even as a young girl.

I dont know what I think about Captured by Love. The writing was good, the research was excellent and I got a real feeling of time and place, but something didnt work for me.

I didnt like the love triangle. Its not that Im against the concept of a love triangle as a plot device, but this felt too contrived (especially as one character kept returning as if from the dead). Perhaps it was because I didnt like the choice Angelique had to make: honour, or love (and I couldnt help but think that it was never a choice she should have had to make).

I didnt like Ebenezer. There was nothing redeeming about his character. It could be said that at least he financially supported his step-daughter, but Im sure he more than recouped that with the brideprice he extracted. And none of the other characters felt real. It was as though they all existed merely to propel Angeliques story along.

The Christian elements were a strange combination of not enough and too much. Not enough, because I never got the impression Angelique had any great (or even small) faith in God. Too much, because the climax depended on her supposed spiritual revelation. I wanted to love Captured by Love, and while I was totally engrossed by the historical setting and the war between the British and the Americans, I was less engrossed by the actual plot and characters.

After reading three of Jody Hedlund's novels, I can say without reservation that she ranks among my favorites when it comes to historical romance. In Captured by Love, Jody's expressive narrative, rich characterization, rugged setting, and spellbinding romance captured my emotions from the first page and didn't even let go after the last page was turned.

For lack of a better term, something that I'll call "the dynamics of three" stood out to me in this story. First of all, Captured by Love is set in British-held Michigan Territory/Mackinac Island during the year of 1814, a very interesting period of America's history and not that familiar to me. Jody certainly made it come alive! It was a time of conflict that involved Americans, British, and Indians - and it was fascinating to see how they played off each other. The rich historical detail that Jody brought in was never boring. And secondly, there was the three-way relationship between Pierre, Angelique, and Jean that gave new meaning to the theme of star-crossed romance.

Pierre and Angelique are such strong, vibrant characters that I couldn't help but be drawn to them immediately. Pierre is a voyageur of French-American descent and wild at heart, forever dreaming of adventure. And in following those dreams, he focused on doing exactly what he wanted without consideration of others. Angelique loves the island wilderness and is quite proficient at securing food for Jean and Pierre's mother, Miriam - but it is her caring nature and selflessness to which readers will be drawn.

Appealing secondary characters of Miriam and Jean contribute greatly to the story, and I especially loved the friendship between Red Fox and Pierre. Jody also excels at creating romantic tension, and the romance between Angelique and Pierre definitely sizzles. Romance fans will not be disappointed!

In his new life of commitment to God, Pierre discovers that God's will doesn't always fit with his desires. One of the predominant themes that spoke to me is that of honor, of trying to do the right thing - and that's not always comfortable, for how easily do we try to find ways to compromise in life? There's another spiritual message that Angelique learned, and it's one of which I constantly need to be reminded - that God is the only sure foundation in my life. The words to this beloved hymn easily sprang to mind: "On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand."

The ending is very satisfying, but I would love to see Jean get his story sometime. Captured by Love is a beautifully entertaining story, one which I highly recommend to all readers.

Thank you to Jody Hedlund and Bethany House for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This fictional historical story is set in 1814 on what we now call Mackinac Island during the British and Indian War. Fur trading was at its height with the demand for animal pelts high in Europe, especially England. Pierre Durant is a young fur trader who has followed in his fathers footsteps against his fathers wishes. His father wanted Pierre to go to school in Detroit, but Pierre has longed to be in the wilderness and free. His father was trying to protect Pierre from the lifestyle that accompanies the fur trade of drinking and carousing. His father wanted him to learn from his mistakes and lead a Godly life. Pierre leaves home without saying goodbye to anyone, including his young friend Angelique to be gone for five years never sending word of his whereabouts. He returns to the island, finding many things have changed in his absence, including Angelique. Can he do what is best for her and what God wants of him? Can he play both sides of the war against each other and survive?

Angelique MacKenzie has been best friends with Pierre and his brother Jean all her growing up years. With her father dying years ago, after her mothers death, her care has been given to a guardian. Her guardian treats her cruelly and mistreats her. She longs for the freedom she had when she was younger, but keeps herself submissive so as not to end up acting like her philandering mother and rebellious sister. She had her heart broken when Pierre left five years ago with no word, even though she was only thirteen. Now, she is betrothed to Pierres brother, Jean, who is away fighting with the Americans against the British, who occupy Mackinac Island. With Pierres return, she is faced with some difficult decisions. Can she rely on God to be her rock and foundation or will she continue to rely on herself?

This is a nice romance set during a war. The constant fight to stave off starvation during the long winter, the cruelty of Angeliques guarding, the spying of Pierre and much more all come together to create an entertaining love story that readers will be sure to like. I liked Angeliques selfless, sacrificial love and Miriams steady and continuous response of prayer in good times and bad. I also liked seeing Pierres character mature and grow into more of the man God desired him to be.

Captured by love, Jody Hedlunds latest offering was once again a well done, and seemless historical fiction novel that I have come to expect from her writing. I thought that this particular novel did a wonderful job with the historical element and the British occupation of Michilimackinac Island (what we know as Mackinac Isnalnd) in 1814. All of the true to life landmarks and situations that she wove into the story are explained in the back of the book and her authors notes at the end are always my favorite part as I realize the artistry that Jody uses to bring her historical fiction a ring of truth. As a historical fiction reader, I truly enjoy that.

But onto the characters- the lovely Angelique with a hard past, an unfaithful mother whose decisions and choices always make her question if she is just like her mother? Her cruel step father fosters these doubts as he makes sure she is clothed in such a way that no one pays her much mind plain and everything buttoned up. She lives in constant fear that he will sell her off in marriage to the highest bidder as he had done with her sister. However, Angelique has given her pledge of marriage to a kind friend since childhood Jean, who has since left the Island to go and fight for the Americans. Theres just one problem, she has never really loved Jean in a romantic way, that was more reserved for his older brother Pierre who is a bit more of a rogue. Pierre is that bad boy turning good type of character who has been out on the fur trading circuit and lived a bit large. He is that cheeky sort and he is delightfully confident in himself , still falls a bit over his own pride, but a very loveable character overall. Having left the Island long ago to pursue his Fur trading, he is returning to check in on his mother and runs into Angelique. When he left her, she was a young girl, but returning home shows him that she was become a most beautiful grown up woman. Angelique attracts him not just for her beauty and red curls, but the fact that she has been taking care of his mother, who in his absence has gone blind and made things around his childhood farm difficult to keep up with.

There are many difficulties for Angelique and Pierre- Angeliques pledge and duty to Jean, her love for staying on the Island and Pierres love for fur trading which would take him far away from Angelique and the Island. Many hurdles to jump over for this couple, make the story unique and interesting. They both in their own way learn to lay down their wants and desires and seek out Gods plan for their future. It was such an interesting contrast as one had to lay down selfishness and the other trying to do things out of duty- a fun story for sure. And as mentioned above- the historical aspect was interesting and played into the story seamlessly. This one is full of romance for sure so for those in for a great historical Christian fiction romance, I think you will really love it.

A well written historical fiction novel that includes actual historical facts and real life characters. The story takes place on Michilimackinac Island, Michigan Territory in 1814. The British army is in control of the island and if the people living there do not sign an oath of allegiance that they are on the side of the British and not the Americans they were forced to leave the island. It has been a harsh winter and the British supply ships have been unable to reach the island. People are starving, cold and weary. The soldiers are taking desperate measures to survive.

Angelique MacKenzie's guardian is Ebenezer Whiley who forces her to dress plain so she does not follow in her mothers footsteps. He is very abusive towards Angelique using harsh punishment and threatens to marry her off to the highest bidder if she does not obey him. She longs to be free of his control and cruelty. Angelique is selfless and giving. She gives up some of her own food to keep her nearly blind and future mother-in-law from starving. She is engaged to her son Jean but cares for the older son Pierre. Peter Durant is a fur trader and left the island several years ago because he would not sign the oath of allegiance. After being absent for so long he returns partly out of guilt and duty to his mother. He cares for Angelique his childhood friend but knows he must put his feelings aside as she to wed his brother.

Will Angelique and Pierre give into their passion for each other? Will she marry Jean? Will the Americans or the British win control of the island? There is so much in this story but written so well you do not get lost in it. This is an amazing and captivating story that I did not want to put down until the end. Humor, hardships, starvation, harsh conditions and struggles. Love and romance. Faith and trust in God. A fast paced action story. It has it all and more. A great read especially for those who love historical fiction,

I received a copy of this book from bookfun.org for my honest opinion and review.
