A voyageur and a young woman swept up in a time of upheaval and danger
discover firsthand the high price of freedom.
The British Army has taken control of Michilimackinac Island and its fort, forcing the Americans to swear an oath of loyalty to the crown in order to retain their land. Pierre Durant is a fur trader who returns after being away from the island for years, only to find the family farm a shambles and those he cares about starving and at the mercy of British invaders.
Torn between the adventurous life of fur trading and guilt over neglecting his defenseless mother, Pierre is drawn deeper into the fight against the British--and into a relationship with Angelique MacKenzie, a childhood friend who's grown into a beautiful woman. She now finds herself trapped by the circumstances of war and poverty, and the cruelty of her guardian, Ebenezer Whiley.
As tensions mount and the violence rages on, Pierre and Angelique must decide where their loyalties rest and how much they'll risk for love.

Captured By Love is well written, full of historical depth and fantastic character development. Angelique captures the heart of her readers immediately through her gentle and sweet spirit, her strength and courage, and her desire to help those even less fortunate than herself. Pierre has realistic struggles but his aspiration to be a better man is commendable. The plot flows seamlessly as the characters become intertwined in a complex story. Jody Hedlund includes true historical detail that adds a nice backdrop to the romance. She grips the readers attention and emotions in another beautiful novel. This book is highly recommended for those who enjoy historical romance.

Oh my stars, I don't know where to begin. Absolutely amazing writing. It's in the minutest of details from dialogue to characterization to action-paced adventure. The pages are steeped in history so vivid I could smell the gun powder, feel Angelique's gnawing hunger, hear the battle sounds. I felt like a time traveller!
And the romance! Oh la la you'll need your fainting couch and smelling salts for this read. You can't expect any less when it comes to such vibrant, opinionated, passionate characters as Pierre and Angelique. Tension crackles off the page every time they are together. Angelique reliving her girlhood crush until it becomes something much deeper and more meaningful. Pierre -- the consummate flirt and the best reformed rake I've met within the pages of a book. He really grapples with Angelique's transformation from girl to woman in his absence from the island. And there are so many obstacles in the way of a happily ever after.
And if the romance doesn't bring enough tension to the story the gritty reality of war certainly will. Hedlund explores a fascinating piece of North American history. Fur traders, voyageurs, Indian alliances, British and Americans at war. An epic tale that left me breathless. You. Must. Read. This. Book! Yes...you!

Jody Hedlund is a well-known author of historical romance novels. Captured by Love, is book number three of her Michigan Brides Collection. Jody Hedlund, is also known as a recipient of the Award of Excellence from the Colorado Romance Writers from the year of 2011.
The book, Captured by Love, takes place in the Michigan Territory during the year of 1814 on the Michilimackinac Island. As the British Army controls the island Angelique MacKenzie struggles with the irreversible effects of a war-stricken territory that is grappled with hunger, poverty, and her bitter situation in regards to the cruel heart of her guardian. But, in the midst of the disarray there is a promise of love and hope as Angelique realizes that God is unfaltering no matter her circumstances.
I recommend any reader to read this book that delights in historical fiction books entwined in romance and the emergent discovery of spiritual dependence upon God. At first glance I did not expect to enjoy the book because of the time period in which it takes place. However, within the first few paragraphs I could seemingly feel the soft fog and the sticky mud as my anticipation grew to follow Angelique on her journey for love, hope, and the loyalties that accompany these aspects of her life.

To be honest, the first thing that attracted me to this book was the fact that the story takes place on Mackinac Island, which is the location of one of my favorite films. Also, I haven't read a lot of books that take place in America in the early 1800s, so I thought it might be a nice change from the usual cheesy westerns and Victorian romances that one usually sees on the Christian fiction market these days.
I don't want to say that this book is a complete dud, because it's really not. It does have potential, but for me it was a disappointment. However, I don't think it was so much that the book on its own is boring that made me decide to not finish it. I think I'm just plain sick of the Christian romance genre in general. I read a lot of Christian fiction-- and I mean a lot. Especially since I began reviewing books. And while a lot of Christian historical fiction is amazing, most of it is just....boring. It seems like people are running out of ideas, and so many romance novels seem to follow the same pattern of events that you feel like if you've read one, you've read them all, ad you feel inclined to quote Scarlett O'Hara: "I just get so bored I could scream."
This is the first book of Jody Hedlund's that I've read, so I can't say I don't like her as an author in general, but I must say her style isn't my favorite. In Captured by Love, as with many romances I've read, I felt like there was too much emphasis on the physical attraction between Pierre and Angelique. There was too much description of how handsome Pierre was, how beautiful Angelique was, and how they couldn't resist each other. I don't want an author to tell me how good-looking the hero is-- I want to be able to know for myself just from reading about him. Let his actions speak for him. And no, I don't want to read about how he's constantly running his hand through his wavy dark hair.
(Actually, on that note, I have to say that while I was reading this my sister was also reading another book by Jody Hedlund and the man in that book had the same habit of running his hand through his hair-- only, according to Sadie, he 'jammed his hand through his hair', sometimes so forcefully that it looked like he was about to pull it out. Well, I thought it was funny.)
So I can't say I was impressed with Captured by Love. Like I said, the story had potential, but I'd rather spend my time reading something more powerful and not so common.
My rating: 5 out of 10

I first discovered Jody Hedlund when I was given a copy of her book 'The Preacher's Bride' as a gift. I instantly fell in love with the way she could weave together a beautiful story and capture my attention with her courageous characters so I was thrilled to read another book written by her. 'Captured by Love' met my expectations and did not disappoint. I do have one "critical" thing to say, but I will get to that in a moment.
The story of Angelique and Pierre is so heart-warming and endearing that you cannot help but smile throughout the entire book. Pierre left his family in a rage and said some hurtful things to the people he loved the day before he left the island leaving them confused and in pain. During the years Pierre is gone he finds Jesus Christ and accepts Him as His Savior and now Pierre is ready to live for the Lord and start fresh with his family so he returns to the island where his home was to ask for forgiveness, but once he arrives he is sad to see much has changed during his absence.
Angelique is a very strong, courageous woman who instantly wins over your heart. She is treated terribly and abused by her stepfather, but manages to keep her focus upon God, seeking His strength and comfort. When Pierre left the island, Angelique was just a young girl, but now after five years have passed she has grown into a lovely young lady and Pierre is in awe of the woman she has become. Pierre left the island thinking of Angelique as a sister, but now there is not one sisterly thought towards her, just thoughts of a man falling in love. . . Angelique has always admired and looked up to Pierre, but after he left she was heart-broken and was comforted by someone else very special to her. And now that Pierre has returned she is not free to give her love to the man she has always cared for.
'Captured by Love' truly is a delightful and enjoyable read and keeps you on your toes throughout the pages. Here is my one "critical" comment. . .I found at times the book revolved too much around the physical attraction between Pierre and Angelique and there were moments when their time together got a little too "heated."
I was given a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. No other compensation was received.
