At the CS Lewis Institute in the Wash DC area in a presentation on CS Lewis his stepson Douglas Grisham said that Joss Ackland gave an accurate portrayal of Lewis.

He went on to say that Debra Winger in the Hollywood version of Shadowlands gave the best portayal of his mother[she recieved an Academy Award nomination for her work]. I have both versions of the Shadowlands and think this one is the best.

The Anthony Hopkins/Debra Winger one is more recent, and, perhaps, not quite so historically accurate. For example, Joy brought TWO sons into her marriage to Lewis, as this film correctly portrays; the more recent film gave her a composite, single son. This film is excellent.

A story of a man who never loved, and a woman who connected with him on the intellectual level he needed to draw that love from him. The question asked in the movie...considering the outcome, is it worth it? To love much is to suffer much. That is exactly what Jesus came to earth to do.

Beautifully done. A sensitive portrayal of the later years of C. S. Lewis. Highly recommended for family as well as individual viewing. JC

I love C.S.Lewis, and in order to fully comprehend him one needs to learn about C.S. Lewis the man. This is a poignant story, I enjoyed Joss Ackland's portrayal of C.S. Lewis and Claire Bloom's portrayal of Joy Gresham. Again, this is a 5 star movie and if someone wants to "know" C.S. Lewis this is the place to start.
