Wow. It's not everyday you find a historical novel like this. Powerful and beautiful, it's a book I'm proud to have on my shelf. Not only were the characters flawlessly portrayed, but I literally had to stop and reread some paragraphs, just to savor the way she knit her words together. It's like I was there; living in the settlement, struggling with the aftermath of war, caught up in the tensions between the natives and the settlers, toiling in the corn fields, watching two people fall in love...

If you're a lover of historical fiction, then do not miss this book. Lori Benton has a new fan and I know for a fact that I'm not the only one. If you're feeling like you need a few days to travel back in time, hop on board. There's no better way to do that then through the pages of this book.

This is a captivating tale of courage. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Willa returns to her childhood home, only to discover things are no longer the same. She struggles with her life between two worlds, and in some ways I was able to relate to that; as I myself have lived in two different cultures. Which world was she really from? Would she ever fit in? What to do about Neil the Scotsman and Joseph Tames-His-Horse, her Mohawk brother who not only came to find her but loves her. There is also, Richard Warring to deal with. In her past as a teen, he was a close friend, maybe more, but now he has turned into a hard man. One determined to have her land, which is up for auction due to her family's supposed loyalties. So many twists and turns to the story, you will keep reading! Although, Willa has lived among the Mohawks for years her faith is in God, and Joseph also is a Christian.

I was hooked from the start. A tale of history, romance, and strength woven through the characters. A tale that depicts the happenings of the era and what those in our country suffered and endured to make our nation what it is today. Definitely recommended!

I received this book from Waterbrook in exchange for my honest opinion.

This review was written for Burning Sky - eBook.
Willa Obenchain was abducted by the Mohawk Indians at the age of fourteen, and has re-invented herself as one of their People. They have given her the name of Burning Sky, and she has gained their trust and confidence that as a white woman, she has what it takes to be one of them. Driven to return to her "real family" after so long with her new one, she struggles with the cultural divide. Back in the place of her childhood, she finds her country has been ravished by war. In just the twelve years she was absent, the Revolutionary War has come and gone, and her childhood home is in horibble disrepair.

Then a brother from the People arrives and puts everything she has re-gained into question. Her parents are missing and rumored to be running with the kind of crowd that if caught, will get them hanged. Two young men lay in wait for her heart, Richard Waring whom she admired many years in the past, and Neil MacGregor who is kind, gentle, and caring for the land and the many people in it. Will she be able to return with Tames-His-Horse back to the People? Or is her life as Burning Sky gone from her forever?

This brilliant novel combines two of my childhood loves; the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, and Indians. As a child, I never understood the fear of Indians that is depicted in the history books and fictional accounts of the "savages". I have always been intrigued by them and their way of life. I determined that if I could live in the past, I would want to be abducted by them so I could see life as a trusted captive and even marry one of their brave warriors and be his squaw. With this novel, Benton has captured the essence and spirit of the times. The hurts and triumphs and dangers of living on the American Frontier despite all odds, and for all the people that did and would inhabit it. Benton writes with the simple passion of one telling a story close to her heart. Her imaginary is more than words on a page, it seeps into your sub-conscience and makes you feel that if you just close your eyes, you too can step into the past with Burning Sky and see her world through her perspective...

Burning Sky is a novel about a woman who was kidnapped at the age 14 by Indians. Set in the late 18th century in the frontiers of New York, Willa Obenchain returns to her family's homestead after having lived among the Mohawk Indians for 12 years. She had been kidnapped when she was 14 years old and was raised as one of them and became an accepted part of their community, and eventually entered into an arranged marriage with an Indian man and had two daughters. After losing her husband in a battle and her daughters to an epidemic, Willa decides from now on she would live alone and care for herself.

On her way back to her childhood home, she comes across an injured stranger on the border of her family's land. When he wakes up in Willa's cabin, he is forced to stay until his broken arm heals. She soon discovers that this man, this Neil MacGregor, is a doctor and a botanist, researching and cataloging the plant life in the Americas. Neil realizes that with each passing day he comes to admire and love her more and more. Neil unleashes feelings in her that she is not ready to face.

I really can't recommend this book enough. This is a fantastic debut novel!

Burning Sky by Lori Benton is a historic novel set right after the Revolutionary War. I wasn't sure what to expect from this story, but the plot sounded intriguing so I decided to go for it. I was drawn into the story from the very first page. The way the author writes for Burning Sky is such a mix of anguish and hope, stoic and vulnerable, love and emptiness. I was so drawn to her and her plight that I could hardly put the book down.

I was mixed about the two men who love Burning Sky. On the one hand, I wanted Joseph Tames-His-Horse to win her, and then other times I really wanted Neil MacGregor to get her! I waffled back and forth through the whole book even though I knew who she would get from the beginning. haha Now on to the synopsis.

Burning Sky was captured twelve years ago by the Mohawks and has since lived a relatively happy life among them. Now left all alone she travels back to her parent's home. Along the way, she finds an injured man who she brings with her. When she reaches the old homestead, it's nothing like she remembered it. Then she finds out that her lands are US property now since her parents were thought to be Tories. Determined to prove her parent's innocence and keep her land, Willa fights to get the evidence she needs before the auction in the fall.

Neil MacGregor is a botanist researching and cataloging the plant life in the Americas. When he wakes up in Willa's cabin, he is forced to stay until his broken arm heals. The longer he is there, the more he comes to admire and love Willa, but will he ever be able to break through her many defenses?

This historical novel is one of the best I have ever read. It was so real, and I loved learning some new facts about the Revolutionary War. I highly recommend this book!!
