"What I have seen, what I have done, it has changed me. I am the place where two rivers meet, silted with upheaval and loss."

The opening prologue of Burning Sky sets the tone for this beautiful frontier novel by debut author, Lori Benton. I was instantly captured by the truth of these words. What we experience changes us and how we view the world--not to mention how the world views us.

Ever since I was a child, devouring books like Caddie Woodlawn and Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison , I have been enthralled with stories of our frontier. Lori Benton's Burning Sky is no exception. Her dazzling descriptions and well-developed characters pulled me into the story immediately and I found myself struggling alongside Willa as she made her choices.

What I loved most about this book was how Lori Benton didn't shy away from the cultural practices of the time period. She deals head-on with issues of slavery and cultural biases between the races. She allows her characters to face these problems honestly, and she resists the temptation to interject our modern-day mindset. Rather than apologizing for the mistakes of our past, she splashes them across the page and trusts the reader to draw his or her own conclusions.

I can't wait to read more by this amazing author!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book for free from Waterbrook Multnomah for the purpose of review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Lori Benton's masterful storytelling breathes love, life, and emotion across the dusty pages of history. Over two centuries later, the spirit of the frontier continues to inspire and encourage us. Women like Willa vulnerably display the beauty of femininity with deep, heartbreaking love and graceful, empowering faith to this day.

Benton is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite authors. I love the way the author unapologetically exposes the raw emotional experiences her characters endure while faithfully crafting word pictures worthy of the vivid and artistic splendor of God's creation which they represent. I highly recommend this book and eagerly anticipate this author's future works.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Like for the two other books by Lori Benton that I've read, I struggle to find words to express my thoughts. There is such beauty, but such anguish and hardship in these pages. The characters are so expertly written they seem real. Willa Obenchain was abducted twelve years earlier, at the age of fourteen, by Mohawks, adopted into the Wolf Clan, and given the name Burning Sky. Joseph Tames-His-Horse is also of the Wolf Clan and therefore, her brother, though his love for her is as more than a brother. After the deaths of her Mohawk family, Willa makes the journey back to her homeland, seeking her father and mother. Almost there, she finds Neil MacGregor, who has taken a tumble from his horse and lies injured. Ever resourceful, Willa builds a travois to drag him the rest of the way to the cabin. Neil is a botanist and artist, working on a field guide of plants. Willa finds her family's cabin, but no one knows the whereabouts of her parents. Though good friends from her childhood are glad to see her, many treat her badly and she faces opposition from one in particular who wants her land. Willa is a very complex character who has faced much tragedy and has built thick walls around her heart, insulating herself from loving or being loved so as not to be so hurt again. There is so much that goes on in this book, set in New York in 1784, but through it all runs a ribbon of hope. This is an excellent historical novel that I recommend highly.

Filled with danger, intrigue, and romance, Burning Sky truly is a beautiful novel. After being kidnapped by Mohawk Indians and living with them for nearly half her life, Willa has suffered much loss and decides to return to her parent's homestead. But instead of finding welcoming arms and love, she discovers that her beloved homestead is abandoned and some of the locals seem to prefer it that way. Willa is a woman who's sure she desires a solitary life, but she finds herself caring for a very charming Scotsman. And when her Mohawk brother arrives and begs her to return to their people, will Willa choose to take the Mohawk trail with her loyal brother or will she stay with a kind Scotsman and the people she was born to? The white world and the Mohawk world are both hers - they are both part of her soul. And when several unwelcoming locals go beyond pestering, will she succumb to their pressures or will she find the courage to follow God's plan for her life? Burning Sky is a wonderful, fascinating novel that will pull at your heartstrings.
