A wonderful treat awaits the reader of Burning Sky by Lori Benton. Her magnificent way with words provides a feast for both mind and heart. Fascinating characters face daunting social problems in their swatch of history. As they struggle for solutions, the reader gets a peek of answers as pertinent to today's issues as they were in the past. A rewarding read awaits.

From the very first page, I was caught up in Burning Sky/Willa's struggle to survive physical and spiritual trials that at times were very painful to comprehend. The historical facts made this story even more enriching. I found myself questioning how I might have handled her situation.

The characters Lori developed were so very real. Your heart is drawn to both Neil and Joseph and anticipating Willa's decision as to her future was intense.

Lori Benton's first book is a treasure. I can't wait for her second book.

Willa Obenchain was abducted by the Mohawk Indians at the age of fourteen, and has re-invented herself as one of their People. They have given her the name of Burning Sky, and she has gained their trust and confidence that as a white woman, she has what it takes to be one of them. Driven to return to her "real family" after so long with her new one, she struggles with the cultural divide. Back in the place of her childhood, she finds her country has been ravished by war. In just the twelve years she was absent, the Revolutionary War has come and gone, and her childhood home is in horibble disrepair.

Then a brother from the People arrives and puts everything she has re-gained into question. Her parents are missing and rumored to be running with the kind of crowd that if caught, will get them hanged. Two young men lay in wait for her heart, Richard Waring whom she admired many years in the past, and Neil MacGregor who is kind, gentle, and caring for the land and the many people in it. Will she be able to return with Tames-His-Horse back to the People? Or is her life as Burning Sky gone from her forever?

This brilliant novel combines two of my childhood loves; the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, and Indians. As a child, I never understood the fear of Indians that is depicted in the history books and fictional accounts of the "savages". I have always been intrigued by them and their way of life. I determined that if I could live in the past, I would want to be abducted by them so I could see life as a trusted captive and even marry one of their brave warriors and be his squaw. With this novel, Benton has captured the essence and spirit of the times. The hurts and triumphs and dangers of living on the American Frontier despite all odds, and for all the people that did and would inhabit it. Benton writes with the simple passion of one telling a story close to her heart. Her imaginary is more than words on a page, it seeps into your sub-conscience and makes you feel that if you just close your eyes, you too can step into the past with Burning Sky and see her world through her perspective...

Burning Sky is the first novel by Lori Benton. It is an interesting tale of America's early days.

Willa Obenchain was abducted by Mohawk Indians at the age of fourteen. Many years later, she finds her way home; however, many things have changed!

Her parents and grandmother are nowhere to be found on the land she had known as home. Once she discovers that her parents were viewed as traitors and that their land is going to be put up for auction, Willa is frantic to save it.

Supported by new friends and old, Willa looks for a way to hold onto this land that is home to her!

This book will or should win awards next year. Wilhemina "Willa" Obenchain was a 14-year-old girl living in a community in upstate NewYork when she was kidnapped and taken in by the Mohawks. She married and had two children but her family is now gone and she has walked all the way back to her family home only to find no one there–that is except a wounded man, and his dog.

What a beautiful tale that meanders at a perfect pace. The repercussions of war are felt by all. Willa's Mohawk "brother" who has more than sibling affection for her still hunts deserters for the British and there is one hiding in Willa's community. Willa's old sweetheart, Richard, who pursued the kidnapped girl for months, his hopes destroyed. Now an embittered man whose soul has been lost in his anger and bitterness at the loss of innocent Willa, the girl he loved, and now comes face-to-face with Willa the survivor, widow of a Mohawk and mother of two deceased metis children. Lori Benton also incorporated a special sweet character, a young man who may be autistic.

God brings Willa full circle. While she has lost everything she regains much.

Excellent pacing and a book you'll have a hard time putting down. And a very satisfying ending, which I love! While this lovely book has a strong literary feel to it, Lori Benton doesn't pull any literary "gimmicks" that I've seen in other books that have off-put me from finishing the story. Rather, she seamlessly weaves a literary book with a broad appeal to historical and romance readers in both inspirational and I believe in the secular market as well. Bravo, Lori!

I received an ARC and am under no compulsion to submit a positive review.
