Stephen Nichols is research professor of Christianity and culture at Lancaster Bible College and Graduate School. He has written several books, including his most recent Bonhoeffer on the Christian Life

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a great theologian, martyr, a spiritual writer, a musician, a pastor, and an author of poetry and fiction. His writings and life have appealed to Christians for generations and his writings continue to be sought out by disciples the world over. In his own time, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian famous for his plot against Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. At one point he even began an underground seminary for the anti-Nazi Confessing Church. Dietrich died at 39 in a Nazi concentration camp, and remains to this day as one of the most famous martyrs of the 20th century.

Bonhoeffer's written works include a sixteen-volume critical look at Systematic Theology and Pastoral work. His books include, Life Together, Letters and Papers from Prison, Ethics and his most famous The Cost of Discipleship.

In Bonhoeffer on the Christian Life: From the Cross, for the World , Nichols compiles of collected work and thought to many theological topics. This isn't a biography on Bonhoeffer's life, more of an introduction to his faith. Each chapter covers a discussion point that is illuminated by Bonhoeffer as to give the reader an understanding of where Bonhoeffer stood.

To be fair, Bonhoeffer can be a little heavy. He originally wrote in German so whenever you read his works, you're already reading through the filter of a translator, so you can never fully appreciate his original prose. I think for the person who has never read Bonhoeffer and would be curious to see if his writings would appeal, Nichols book is an excellent primer.

This volume is part of the Theologians on the Christian Life series published by Crossway. Thank you to Crossway for this free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
