Tell us a little about yourself. Billy Tucci: Ive been very blessed in life to support my family writing, illustrating, and publishing professionally for over twenty years now. My introductory title, Shi, which follows the adventures of a modern-day warrior woman living in New York has been printed in five languages and sold over three million books worldwide. But Ive also had a lot of fun producing mainstream comics and games such as Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Superman, Sgt. Rock, and many other others including writing and illustrating the 2011 Eisner-nominated Batman A Trick For The Scarecrow.
What was your motivation behind this project? BT: To have the opportunity to tell the Nativity story has always been the dream project for me, but what really motivated me to finally answer the calling was my wifes two-year victory over breast cancer. She has endured so much with three major surgeries, an aggressive chemotherapy regimen, and now all the follow-up medication. Even though it was the hardest time of our lives, a lot of good came out of it. Weve found a greater appreciation for family, friends, and life in general. Its a scare that makes you put your priorities in order and to follow your heart. For over a decade, Deborah has lived with my passion to bring A Child Is Born to fruition. When this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came about, she told me to go for it!
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? BT: I hope that readers understand the Story of Christmas starts and ends with the Bible, primarily within the books of Matthew and Luke. And what a story it is, as these short verses hold so many elements of life itself! Awe, doubt, fear, adventure, determination, judgment, love, hate, jealousy, danger, joy, sorrow, hope, and faith its all captured in the Gospels. If we look at this story of a young couple, seemingly plucked from obscurity and given the greatest responsibility in the world--to carry, raise, and protect the Savior of Mankind--we can, in our own small and personal way, see our own lives in it.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? BT: When I first started researching the book, I met with the priest of the local Greek Orthodox Church. He was very generous with his time, answering my questions and lending me many books and DVDs from various Nativity scholars. One thing he said that really struck me after our first meeting was not to lose your faith over this. He meant that in the process of trying to tie all the loose ends together, I might raise as many questions as answers. But I must be honest; once I started this journey, I was never alone. Its been quite epic, really, the many challenges and failures Ive come up against. But for every fall there was always someone to raise me up, to befriend me, to encourage me as they too came along on the road to Bethlehem. Because of A Child Is Born, Ive seen, felt, and learned so much...and my faith has never been stronger.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? This has been an incredible faith-based journey. Again, I started with the Old and New Testaments but also discovered so many wonderfully researched writings by experts on the Nativity Narratives. I was inspired to get the feel of the timehow an ancient Israelite would wear their hair and clothing, what the homes in Jerusalem and Nazareth would look like 2,000 years ago, how an olive tree grows, even what type of pottery would be in Bethlehem. I went full tilt with my own research, devouring books, visiting museums, and soaking my conscience with Byzantine, Renaissance, and surrealistic art. It was the most inspiring professional experience of my life and I approached it not just as a spiritual document, but a historical one as well.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: My nine-year-old son innocently asked why I was working on a book about Jesus instead of superheroes. My reply to his query was simple: Jesus is a superherothe greatest superhero to walk the earth! In closing, Id like to point out how everyone involved in this book went all in. It was truly a labor of love and a shining example of how Apostle Arts will approach all of our publications, to be a new type of independent publisher, one that is committed to bringing high-quality, visually engaging family and faith-based products to customers around the world. Like the Magi and the Holy Family in A Child Is Born, our wonderful journey has just begun!
