This review was written for #2: Beyond the Ashes.
Beyond the Ashes is a wonderful, historical romance set in San Francisco in 1906, after the devastating earthquake and the fires that followed. The main storyline follows Dr. Gerald Larkspur and Nurse Ruby King Marshall as a budding romance seems to be flowering. On the other hand there are many obstacles, including the handsome and charming Reverend Patrick Allison.

What I enjoyed most about this story is its complexity and numerous subplots, the aftermath of the earthquake being fertile ground for many twists and turns in the story. The early twentieth century was also a prime time of advances in medicine and in machines, such as the X-ray machine and the automobile. Socially, old customs and attitudes seem to be easing toward more freedom and independence for women. All these things together make a very interesting and compelling novel.

Spiritually, this book has much to offer. A major theme is trusting in God and accepting His plans for our lives. We see characters struggling with this, as we all do or have done at times in our lives.

Although, Beyond the Ashes is the second book in The Golden Gate Chronicles. Im looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like historical romance, I think you will find this book to be a good one.

Karen Barnetts writing continues to improve and delight. Out of the Ruins is very well told, with quite believable characters facing dramatic struggles following the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The second in the Golden Gate Chronicles, this novel focuses on widow Ruby Marshall, a young nurse who comes to assist her brother and others in the midst of the citys devastation. She hadnt planned on love entering the picture and tries to resist its pull. Dr. Gerald Larkspur and his associate, Robert King (Rubys brother), continue their fight against cancer using x-ray therapy. Gerald has no time for romance, but circumstance seem to dictate differently. Can this couple who has been thrown together in a time of uncertainty make a long-term relationship work? Perhaps more than the city could rise from the ashes.

Ever since I read the first book in this series, The Golden Gate Chronicles, I have looked forward to reading the next one in the series. I was absolutely hooked on this series from the first page of the last book and I wasn't disappointed in this one. I immediately picked up where I had left off after the earthquake and fire of San Francisco.

Ruby is a woman who isn't afraid to take chances. As a new widow, she left the old to start a new life. Albeit, she thought that she was going to San Francisco to help in the recovery and to help her brother not be so lonely. When she arrived, she realized that he may not be as lonely as she had thought. I was glad to see her come go back into nursing and helping others. Her relationship with her patients were sweet. My favorite relationship she had was with a lady named Dee. Of course, I liked Dee anyway!

Dr. Gerald Larkspur wants a wife but he also has something going on with him physically that he needs to determine what it is. They symptoms point to something worse, but he is trying his hardest not to worry or cause anyone else to worry about it.

Ruby has to decide if she can possibly open her heart to love again and overcome her fear of something happening again. Dr. Gerald has to decide if there's someone out there that he can truly love.

I cannot wait for the third book in this series. I have thought so much about this first book and that has been awhile since I read it. Now I'll be thinking about this one for quite a while, too. I enjoy the history that fills the series. It's a page turner and one that is hard to put down.

Dr. Gerald Larkspur is one of the earliest doctors involved in cancer research and treating patients with experimental means. As of yet, he has had no success in curing any of his patients, including his own cousin. While still grieving the death of his young cousin, he continues his research with the help of his young partner and protg, Robert King. Roberts story is told in book one of the series, Out of the Ruins. After the earthquake, which affected everyone in the city, Gerald has opened his home to his mother, Robert, his cousins family and soon Roberts sister. He always wanted a full house, but thought it would be with his own wife and children. He doesnt regret his decision, but it is difficult to find a place to be alone for just a little while.

Ruby Marshall is a young widow with nurses training. She lost her husband two years ago and has sunk into numbing grief and feels she has no purpose. She is tired of going to wedding after wedding so she decides to go to San Francisco to help her brother with her nursing skills in the hospital where he works. When she arrives, she learns of his engagement and that she will be living in the home of a bachelor, who is her brothers partner. She hasnt come looking for romance and tries her best to keep Gerald at a distance, but cant fight her heart. She likes to think she is in control of her life, but Gerald teaches her that God is in control and will do what is best no matter what.

I really enjoyed seeing Ruby grow in her faith, making the decision to give control of her life to God and love Gerald no matter how long they have together. She faced her fear of losing someone else she loved, releasing that fear to God. Gerald showed Ruby by example how to trust God first and foremost. This served as a reminder to me as to where my trust is placed. How about you?
