Prayer is a lifeline, a beacon of hope that we can cling to in life's difficult moments...Lord, please protect my family...God, I need your help to make it through today...Jesus, thank you for your grace...It goes on and on. Prayer is the most necessary and most basic expression of our faith, yet we often struggle to do it. The daily duties of life crowd in, filling our days with activity and we don't communicate with our heavenly Father.
Thankfully, we aren't the first followers of Jesus to struggle with prayer. The disciples did too. In response to their questions, Jesus gives them, and us, a simple, beautiful example to follow. Likewise, in Before Amen, Max Lucado explores the very heart of Biblical prayer by offering distilled, hope-filled prayers that will help you turn your heart towards the One who longs to speak with you.

We all pray . . . some.
We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray.
But wouldnt we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency?
Yet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer? Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests.
We arent the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested.
And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldnt we use the same?
In Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.

We can pray through the Valley of Vision book.
We can pray through Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication.
We can pray by just talking and thinking towards God all day.
And Max Lucado has offered us another way... the Pocket Prayer.
It's quiet, simple, and direct. From our lips to His ear, our heart to His hand.
I am wary of books on prayer. I hate the idea that we'll distort prayer somehow, and make faith more difficult for people.
I'm afraid we'll make prayer seem like a formula or a machine.... something that "works" or "fails" or is "reliable."
I don't know if prayer "works." That's kind of like saying a Mother's love for her baby "works." I think that is the wrong concept for it.
I don't know if prayer "fails." I know Love never fails, and God is love.
And I don't like the idea of prayer being "reliable" either... Do you mean you always get God's ear and His care, or that you always get the answer you thought you wanted?
I'm frankly unsure what to make of my own Lord Jesus's promise that if we ask we will receive. I know that He is Love, and He is Good, and He always does the Right thing, so if we're asking for goodness, love, and righteousness we receive it. We are encouraged to pray for our dear ones, our dreams, and our desires. And He delights in protecting, providing, and preserving.
Yet I also know that sometimes death, disease, and destruction come to us as well.
Prayer doesn't ward those things off like an incantation. Prayer brings us close to God, and takes out cares before Him.
And He acts for us. That's all I know.
So I was eager to get this book, but cautious about it as well.
I really like Max Lucado. His writing is calm and steady and not fearful. It's good for the soul.
This book isn't an extensive how-to-pray manual. (Do we even need those anyway?)
This is a very thin book that introduces us to The Pocket Prayer, and reminds us that when we pray our posture or phraseology ain't that important.
It's all about the fact that God loves His kids, and we are the kids, and we can tell Him anything and He waits to listen.

Loving MommahoodMichiganAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Love Max Lucado!September 12, 2014Loving MommahoodMichiganAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In "Before Amen: The Power of a Simple Prayer" Max Lucado shares about all of the different types of prayer, and how to pray when it's hardest. He shares his "Pocket-size Prayer", an easy to remember prayer to help you get started. He explains that prayer isn't for a select few. It's the way all of us were designed to have a heartfelt conversation with God!
In "Before Amen", Lucado explains that prayer doesn't have to be so formal. It can just be a simple conversation. When you talk to your earthly father, do you use "thee", "thou", and make your requests sound like something out of the renaissance? Yes, you can pray that way, but God still hears you when you talk to Him like you talk to your earthly father. Prayer is an intimate conversation. God wants to hear from us!
The Pocket-size Prayer is not some gimmick. It's simply a tool to help us learn how to pray. It can be expanded to cover any communication with God.
I really enjoyed this book! In fact, I have not yet read a book of Max Lucado's that I didn't like. His writing is very easy to read and understand. When I read his books, I feel like I am reading something written to me by a friend. I highly recommend this book and rate it as 5 stars.
I received this book for free from Litfuse in exchange for my honest unbiased opinion.

By: Max Lucado
Before Amen is a book about learning to pray. We dont have time to pray, we dont know what to say, we dont know how to say it, and we wonder if God really listens when we pray. While reading this book, it was like Max Lucado was in my living room talking to me as I read. What a book!
I like to turn pages down, or highlight something to read again later. I would have highlighted the whole book. How do we address God when we pray? Father. Thats all we need. There are no secret words, no code words, just words from the heart. And you dont even need to speak. God hears you. We all pray some, but to pray more, better, fire, faith, and fervency? Check out this book! Lucado does a great job breaking it all down and explaining how simple it really is. Believe God is who He is, trust Him with what you cant handle, believe in His word, and watch God move.
Does your world change when you pray? Do your circumstances, regrets, past, change because you pray? No, but you are surrounded by peace when you turn it over to God. He can handle it. Just talk to Him. He is in control and will keep you safe.
Dont worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs and dont forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this you will experience Gods peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:6-7 TLB)
This verse says it all. Gods peace. For you. Talk to God today and feel Him near. I love this book for the simple yet straightforward way to prayer.

Lucado wasn't one of them. He was a prayer wimp. Now he calls himself a recovering prayer wimp. Pocket prayers made the difference.
Lucado shares a pocket prayer. Here is the prayer:
You are good.
I need help.
Heal me and forgive me.
They need help.
In Jesus' name.
He expands on each part of the prayer, explaining how we can use it continually in our day. When the need arises, we pull out the pocket prayer and put it to use.
The last half of the book is the Study Guide where we are encouraged to put the pocket prayer into practice. That guide could be used personally with a journal or with a group of friends. There are questions on each chapter of the book centered around Personalize, Reflect, Abide, Yield. Other aids are at the back of the book, such as identifying your prayer strengths.
Lucado has taken a very difficult subject for many, communicating with an unseen God, and made it a very doable action. He encourages us to have the same enthusiasm as children do for their Daddy. He has great chapters on healing, on guilt and forgiveness, on praying for others (I can't but You can.), and on giving thanks. He supplements his teaching with stories told in his unique style.
This is a very encouraging book on prayer. If you think of yourself as a prayer wimp, this book will help you. Even if you excel in prayer, this book is a great reminder that it is not how we pray that counts but the One who hears it.
There are loads of other materials associated with the book so it can be used in a classroom or for sermons.
Food for thought:
This much is sure: God will teach you to pray.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Litfuse for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
