My 7th grader said she actually enjoyed using this book for her grammar studies and is looking forward to the next book. She found it challenging, yet logical and easy to use. She has gone through this book on her own, with me checking her work daily, which has proved to be a good system for us.

I must admit, there are a few times when going through the teacher's manual/answer key that I've had to reference the lesson because there were things I didn't learn in my own high school grammar education.

As far as the book itself - I find it somewhat annoying that the lessons give #1 as an example in most exercises, then the key only gives answers beginning at #2 - I would prefer a "sample exercise" - then start at #1.

Then on Lesson 31, page 94 - the numbering is off for all of the final exercise questions, but not a big deal once we realized and fixed it.

This set of grammar books are perfect for the recommended age, provided that the student has already completed approximately 6 years of basic grammar study, which is also expected by 7th grade.

It is not for a student who has had no previous grammar education.

This is a very complete grammar course. If your child is lacking in this area I would wait a year after the publishers suggestion. This is serious grammar. As with all CLP materials, the bargain and quality cannot be beat.

This may be a good grammar book to use as a thorough review for an older student, but I don't recommend it for students who are not well versed in grammar. The lessons introduce a topic inadequately by giving only a definition, then a few examples, before presenting a set of 10-12 rather difficult problems. I feel there is too little effort given to developing a firm understanding of the topic. This proved to be very frustrating for our 7th grader, and after two weeks we shelved the book. We may return to it in high school, possibly as a prep/review prior to entering college.

We are giving up on this book. My 7th grader seems to get maybe every 5th exercise. He's not a grammar wiz, but he's not that much of a dummy. My husband and I are both writers and obsessive readers (he was homeschooled, so he has the advantage) and most of the time WE can't figure out what's going on. The concepts are not explained enough, or practiced enough and the exercises are difficult, not to mention a pain to try to correct. If this book had a companion text with more practice and examples, it might be good, but as it is it's causing more harm than good.

I think this book is lacking in number and quality of examples. I have had to go to the internet for each lesson to find more explicit examples and practice work sheets. The text forces even an adult to do more research to fully understand the concept. There isn't enough information or opportunity for practice in the book.
