My Take: I am always looking for a new devotional book that will help deepen my quiet time and help with my understanding of the Bible. This devotional fits that bill. Each day is started with a portion of scripture that has something to do with Jesus teaching. Then the second half of the devotional is the authors thoughts on that portion of scripture. I like the way the book is set up and the fact that the daily readings do not have specific dates attached to them so you don't have to fell like you are playing catch up if you miss a day or two and you can just start where you are. This devotional takes the subjects listed above and address what Jesus has to say about each subject , taken straight from scripture.
I have enjoyed my journey with Jesus so far this year and will more than likely be continuing this journey for many years to come.

This is a nice, simple devotional book that I found to be perfect for mornings. The focus on the words of Jesus is wonderful and the thoughts are gentle reminders for us to carry throughout the day. While this book will most likely not lead you into any great self examination it will encourage you and spur you on to good works.
My only complaint is the author's use of the Message as Biblical text. I find the Message paraphrase to be distasteful and because I chose to look up the texts in my personal Bible it made using this devotional a little less convenient. However, if you do not have an aversion to it then it would be a problem for you.

I admit to being a bit of a junior when it comes to devotional books. I dislike (and even distrust some) devotionals that come up with a nicely packaged thought based on a single verse or two of the bible. So I have been very careful in choosing devotional aids, they have to deal with scripture well and fairly.
A Year With Jesus takes a reasonable size passage of scripture mainly from the four Gospels, with a handful from Acts and Revelation, each day. It then gives a reflection on the particular passage that has a similar quality to the notes in a Life Application bible. That is a reflection which has some commentary on the passage with an application that the reader can take away and mull over for the rest of the day.
All told I look forward to spending A Year With Jesus. The nature of this devotional book is what I look for in a daily devotion - devoted to scripture.

A Year with Jesus, written by R.P. Nettlehorst, has been a pleasure to read.
As the name implies, this book has a bible teaching (based on Jesus’ words) for every day of the year. I have not completed reading this book yet, because I am reading it the way it was designed to be read—day by day.
But from what I have read so far, A Year with Jesus is a well-written book full of encouragement for Christians everywhere. Each date starts with a passage from the Gospels. This passages is followed by an explanation by the author. Mr. Nettlehorst has a talent for explaining Jesus’ words in light of the time period from which he lived. I think that the entire New Testament, including Jesus’ words—is so difficult to understand if you are missing the historical context to the text. Nettlehorst provides that missing link.
In the process, he gives you true comfort. I imagine that Jesus would be (or is) truly happy with Nettlehorst’s book.

A year with Jesus is a great daily devotional that is numbered daily (not set dates.) The format of this book is broken down into categories, such as Love and Hate, Truth and Lies. Each daily devotional is laid out by scripture first then how that scripture can apply to our lives. There are a total of 365 devotions.
I would say that this is an excellent devotion. One of the nice things is that it is not dated so you can pick up from where you left off if you miss a day. I would say that it is not over the top in depth but is enough of a reminder of certain verses in the Bible and how we should apply them. If you are looking for great depth instead of just guiding this isn't the book for you. I have not read the whole book but I have done daily devotionals for a couple of weeks out of this book. Easy to share with others.
I received this book from Thomas Nelson in return for an honest review.
