Small town lawyer, Corbin Gage, has a chance to take part in a David versus Goliath type of case. Two young boys have developed cancer. Corbin thinks the fertilizer plant, the only employer of good jobs in his southern town, is responsible. He believes they have dumped chemicals that have caused these two boys to get sick. Taking on a case like this one will require stamina, resources and finances that Corbin hasn't had in years.

Corbin is an alcoholic, and has been for decades. His law practice is neglected, and alcohol runs his life. Years of drinking have dulled his mind, as well as, drained his personal finances, along with those of his law practice. Despite being a dysfunctional parent, both his children, Ray and Roxy, have followed in his footsteps and become lawyers. Neither work with him. They both keep Corbin at arm's length or farther, from them.

    Hanging on by a thread.

Lately, the consequences of his drinking have really caught up with Corbin, and he is barely hanging on. Recently, he had to spend a night in the local jail when caught drunk driving. Ray and his wife are threatening to take away the one-on-one time he has with his only grandson. Billy is the only bright light in his life, and he is about to be yanked away from him because of his drinking.

This case is a real hornet's nest.

Corbin hasn't taken a big case like this one in years, and no one thinks he is still capable of doing it--but he would like to prove everyone wrong. He really wants to help these children, and their families. Corbin has a history of hurting and disappointing Ray and Roxy because of his drinking. Now, if he gets involved with this case, it, too, could have negative consequences for both their careers. He has never admitted to being an alcoholic, but now just might be that time.

I really liked these characters, and hope I get a chance to meet them again in the author's future books. This book's first page pulls you in, and you will be hard-pressed to put it down until reaching the last one. The author is a highly skilled story teller. When Corbin is struggling with drinking, you really get inside his head and feel the internal battle he is waging. You will feel as if you have visited an AA meeting with Corbin, and understand how hard it will be for him to do the twelve steps of the program--but that he can do it.

Mr. Whitlow ended the story in a way I didn't see coming, and I really liked that. This is a great five-star, legal thriller written from a Christian viewpoint, and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

At first, there seemed to be very little about Corbin Gages life with which I could connect. He is divorced and his ex-wife has just died, he can barely function without alcohol, his relationship with his daughter and son and daughter-in-law is very precarious, and the list goes on. I am married to my one and only wife of 49 years, I have never tasted the first drop of alcohol, I get along well with my son and daughter, and so on. The author has written a masterful story of how alcohol has almost destroyed Corbins life and does it in such a way that even someone like me can see how it keeps pulling him into its clutches. I could totally relate to Ray and Roxy when they lost their jobs because I have been there and done that on several occasions. The issues in this book are so real and affect so many people in the world. Alcoholism, job loss, broken families, life-threatening illnesses, and large corporations with no concern for individuals are all rampant. This is not a non-fiction book with all the answers laid out in neat little lists. It is a fictional story that draws the reader in to the point of feeling the pain of the various characters. But there is also a thread of hope running through the book. Quite honestly, I am one who would be inclined to say that all of the problems stemmed from Corbins abuse of alcohol but I know thats not true. That may be a predominant factor in his personal problems but has nothing to do with the job losses of his son and daughter or with the illnesses of the children in the story. Although the story doesnt end as I was envisioning, I loved the last line. I recommend you read the book but dont jump to the back to read the last line first. Save that for the end. I believe you will enjoy the book and find a lot of hope in its pages.

A House Divided, by Robert Whitlow, is another incredible novel from this author! Both the courtroom and personal drama in this legal thriller will keep the reader turning the pages until the very end.

Corbin Gages personal life is a shambles. His son and daughter-in-law are threatening to limit his time with his grandson due to his alcohol problem. His daughter wants nothing to do with him. His law practice is barely surviving. When he begins to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to appease his son and accepts a case for two boys with cancer against the largest employer in the county, his family is not sure what to think. When the case impacts both of his childrens lives, things get even more difficult for him. But when Corbin begins to really believe in God, his life takes many unexpected turns. He begins to think of his ex-wifes prayers for him and their children, to ponder his sons words, And theres no statute of limitations on prayer.

This was a wonderful book. I especially appreciated the honest portrayal of Corbins alcoholism and its effects upon his family. The Alcoholics Anonymous program is clearly outlined within this story. Many of the characters added personality to the plot, including Billy and Janelle. Roxys hardened attitude was very sad, and I was glad that Whitlow included Peter to soften her and encourage her to face her fears.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys legal suspense novels or has had contact with an alcoholic.

Robert Whitlow in his new book, A House Divided published by Thomas Nelson takes us into the life of Corbin Gage.

From the back cover: Corbin Gage can stand up to anyone . . . But his own divided house will bring him to his knees.

Corbin, a longtime legal champion for the downtrodden, is slowly drinking himself into the grave. His love for mountain water has cost him his marriage to the godliest woman he knows, ruined his relationship with his daughter, Roxy, and reduced the business at his small Georgia law firm to a level where he can barely keep the bill collectors at bay. But it isnt until his son, Ray, threatens to limit Corbins time with his grandson that Corbin begins to acknowledge he might have a problem.

Despite the mess that surrounds his personal life and against the advice of everyone he knows, Corbin takes on a high-stakes tort case on behalf of two boys who have contracted non-Hodgkins lymphoma due to an alleged chemical exposure. The defendant, a fertilizer company, is the largest employer in the area. The lawsuit becomes a tornado that sucks Corbin, Ray, and Roxy into an increasingly deadly vortex. Equally intense pressure within the family threatens to destroy, once and for all, the thin threads that connect them.

Corbin must find the strength to stand up to his personal demons. Justice for two dying boys depends on it . . . his family depends on it.

Let me start by saying that I think that this book may be Mr. Whitlows best yet! There is a town that really needs help. There is the Gage Family that really needs help. As the Family begins to heal then so does the town. A House Divided is full of suspense and intrigue. Corbin takes on the defense of two boys going up against a fertilizer company that is a big employer. For Justice to be served he is going to need the help of both his son and daughter. For that to happen God is going to have to intervene. In A House Divided there are so many twists and turns that you will be amazed at the outcome of the story. Robert Whitlow has written interesting characters in Corbin, Ray and Roxy that keep us involved in the story and make us root for them to win. A House Divided is a powerful story and one that will keep you highly interested and flipping pages as fast as you can. I liked this book and recommend it to your reading list.

When I read the back cover I was a little skeptical that I would enjoy the story line. Im not a big fan of the little guy going after big business. However, the author brought out the family dynamics created by the senior Gages alcoholism, which I found extremely moving.

I enjoyed the different characters in this story. Corbin was interesting to watch his development as he comes to terms with the death of his ex-wife. The author does a great job drawing out the complexity of relationships and how alcoholism damages everyone. The relationship that was the sweetest was between Corbin and his grandson.

The story itself was excellent. The tension between the family and how the family relationship affect other relationships was woven throughout the story. It was not what I would call action pack, but the story interested me from the start to finish. I also enjoyed seeing inside AA meetings. The author did a great job of showing the ups and downs that alcoholics face. It really made feel for the characters, especially Corbin.

I would recommend this book to family and friends.
