Publisher's Description

Change is brewing for Lily Lapp. Her favorite cousin, Hannah, moves away and Harvey Hershberger, a boy with a talent for trouble, moves right in. Harvey's antics stir up the entire schoolhouse, and his fondness for Lily gets under Aaron Yoder's skin. Add in a mischievous dog rescued by Lily's brother, an old Shawnee Indian and a mother bear, and a secret Lily's mother is keeping, and you've got a recipe for laughter, love, and big surprises.

Girls ages 8 to 12 will love navigating the changes in Lily's world with her in this final book in the sweetly simple Adventures of Lily Lapp series.

Co-authors Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher bring to conclusion the series of four books in the life of young Lily. Lily is Amish and a precocious little girl whose antics get her in trouble as she grows and learns and who faces life circumstances akin to all young girls.

Book four, A Surprise for Lily, has Lily's beloved cousin, Hannah, moving. Lily is 11 years old now and facing more responsibilities and changes. As in the other three books in the series, the Amish life experience pictures a simple life-style with the absence of many conveniences and comforts the rest of the world knows. But they are for the most part a happy, content group of people. Folks whose religious beliefs are the guiding force in all they do.

They are a group of people who come together as a community and help one another through various experiences and sadness.

Lily experiences a classmate, Effie, that is still up to mean tricks and who makes life in the classroom and community hard for Lily. And then, too, the boy in the classroom, Aaron, continues to trouble her. But change has to come.

Young girls will enjoy this entire series.

This review was written by my second oldest, "B".

A Surprise for Lily is another great book. The fourth in the series written by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher. I really like the Lily Lapp books. Lily has grown and matured so much throughout the series. A lot happens in this installment.

Lily's cousin, Hannah, and her family moves away and her grandpa passes away. I really felt bad about for Lily because Hannah was her best friend. Lily misses them very much. Lily's brother, Joseph, finds/gets a dog which he names Dozer, short for bulldozer. Joseph loves his pup and makes excuses for every naughty puppy thing he does, such as: stealing boots, pulling clothes off the line and digging in the garden. Lily does not quite appreciate Dozer's talent for getting into mischief. :) I like Dozer, but could understand why Lily found him annoying. He caused Lily and Mrs. Lapp an awful lot of extra work.

The long awaited baby "sister" arrives and turns out to be a new brother, much to Lily's disappointment. Poor Lily, she waited so long for a sister.

Other news, Danny started going to school with Lily and Joseph, a new family comes to town, the Hershbergers, who have six children (3 boys and 3 girls). One of the boys, Harvey, who is nine and a bit of a trouble maker_..until Lily's mother helped the new teacher (Teacher Judith) with English classes and outwits him. He suddenly never acts up again. I don't think I could have treated Harvey the way Mrs. Lapp did. She did an amazing job.

Aaron Yoder still plagues Lily but she, Aaron and Harvey actually became friends in this book, after the boys helped Lily in two incidents - both involving Dozer, who she learned to appreciate and love. I loved the fact that Harvey, Aaron and Lily became friends, it showed how much Lily had grown up.

    Two thumbs up from "B"!

Our sweet Lily is back. She's eleven and Effie Kaufman is still the bane of her existence.

It looks like Lily is getting more than one surprise in this book. It's just that some are bigger than others. Aaron Yoder and Harvey Hershberger were even involved in some of Lily's surprises.

Even though this is book four in The Adventures of Lily Lapp series, it is a good stand alone book with each chapter telling a different story. I look forward to more of Lily's adventures. She can certainly get herself into some messes.

A Surprise for Lily is book four in Suzanne Woods Fisher's and Mary Ann Kinsinger's delightful Adventures of Lily Lapp series.

Lily is now 11 years old and continues to find adventure in her day-to-day activities. As she encounters big changes in her family, her school, her church, and her community, readers get an inside view of Lily's Amish life and learn more about a lifestyle both similar to and different from their own.

Lily's stories, while entertaining for adult readers, are especially suited for 8-12 year olds. The book functions well as a whole; or the chapters can be read in individual sittings, much like a collection of short stories.

The fact that Mary Ann Kinsinger grew up Amish lends an extra measure of credibility to the book. And Suzanne Woods Fisher's expert writing brings the stories to life for readers of all ages.

Young readers can have more fun with Lily at www.AdventuresofLilyLapp.com.

In the first three books in the series The Adventures of Lily Lapp, we've seen young Lily experience many life events - daily struggles, happiness of being a little girl growing up in a happy home, sadness at inevitable life events, good friends and bad friends, good adults and adults that behave poorly. And in A Surprise for Lily, book four, as a fifth grader she experiences more of the same and then more new choices and events come her way, too.

The book starts out with Lily and best friend Hannah getting in a rowboat and pushing off into the middle of the pond. Well, that ends up poorly. But it is a lesson learned just as many lessons are learned by Lily each day.

They discover a lost puppy and give him a home. The Amish tend to care much for animals and are certain that their needs are met. Little Dozer, the puppy, brings joy to the children in the Lapp household.

As Lily continues to endure the poor attitude and actions another little girl in the community, Effie, she learns valuable lessons in right and wrong behavior. She also learns from one of the boys who continues to be the bane of her existence, Aaron Yoder. She learns he is not all bad and he has some pretty good traits.

I have lots of grand children, and I have grand daughters, a 9-year old and a 7-year old, that wait excitedly for each new Lily Lapp book to come out. I know book four will not disappoint them. Just as Lily has learned lessons, my grand daughters learn lessons. They learn from Lily's mishaps and joys as well.

Again, I highly recommend The Adventures of Lily Lapp. If you haven't acquired the first three books, you can read book four as a stand alone. But I highly recommend the entire series.
